This might seem like an odd choice of words but this is also often a very pretty picture. The lighting and shot composition are exquisite. And the special and visual effects? Fantastic.

And, OH, these visuals! Cregger’s work with Dariusz Wolski is next level. Loved the longer shots that make the movie so all-consuming, and then they’re also absolute aces with the jump scares. Some of the best I’ve seen in a while.

A silly charmer with just enough fight and determination. A pitch perfect performance.

Perri Nemiroff @pnemiroff.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Was already a massive Austin Abrams fan going into this, but this performance is an all-timer that better send his star soaring in a significant way. He couldn’t be better at playing an ill-equipped guy just bumbling his way through this situation.

Perri Nemiroff @pnemiroff.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Zach Cregger’s RESIDENT EVIL is outstanding. Far and away one of the best video game adaptations I’ve ever seen, and also one of the best horror comedies I’ve ever seen. Cannot believe how many hilarious beats this movie has without ever diminishing the stakes or sheer terror of the situation.

8. ANCESTORS: In his director’s statement, David Turpin calls his film a séance. An intriguing idea but, admittedly, thought it might be an impossible sensation to truly achieve … then I saw the film. He pulled it off.

7. HA-CHAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY!: What a performance from Rinko Kikuchi! Spellbound by her every move/choice in this movie. An ambitious and, ultimately, very effective mix of heavy drama, comedy and fantasy.

6. HOW WE STAND: So impressed by how the sisters’ story in this movie breaks apart, and then comes back together. So it goes when you have a top-tier ensemble and a director with the ability to weave their present situations and their past together beautifully.

5. ALL THAT SHE WANTS: A festival favorite. A lovely blend of comedy, drama and romance. Annie Murphy and Cooper Raiff make a spot-on pairing. A big old bright spot in this year’s TIFF line-up!

4. AMERICAN HOSTAGE: A group so great we had to split them into 2 interviews! Halfway through the show and am quite into what I’m seeing so far. Giovanni Ribisi is especially electrifying, and loving the style & energy of the show.

3. CARRIE: A treat to reunite with Mike & Summer after SDCC … and after getting the chance to watch the whole show. The convo is spoiler-free, but we get to dig into so many more details — the show’s A+ director line-up, Summer’s collaboration with Alison Thornton & Siena Agudong, and SO much more!

2. THE LIFE AND DEATHS OF WILSON SHEDD: A challenging watch no doubt, but those feelings are welcome when they’re this well earned. The whole ensemble is top-tier. Amanda Seyfried? Such complexity! Such depth! And Scoot McNairy gets material that sincerely left me breathless.

7. PURGATORY: One of the nicest surprises at TIFF for me. Of the charts charm and warmth. And a stellar first feature for Ruby McGurrin. Better be the first of many for her!

3. ALPHA GANG: A whole bunch of my favorites working together! Love stepping into a David and Nathan Zellner created world … especially one that serves as a good reminder to appreciate the little things. (And all the good we’re lucky enough to have in this world for that matter.)

2. THE JULIA SET: A gem of a film. Chase Infiniti continues to prove she’s a star, Christopher Briney nails a mighty challenging role, and Chloe Bailey, Nico Hiraga and Jason Isaacs all making huge impressions with their supporting turns.

TIFF 2026 INTERVIEWS - DAY 2 1. EVERYBODY WANTS TO F*CK ME: I think I say this 10x during this interview but WHAT an ambitious feature directorial debut for Jonathan Schey. Coulda talked about the genre/tonal tightrope they’re walking all day long!

2. CLOSING NIGHT: No way to put into words how much I admire and appreciate Sarah Paulson. She is FANTASTIC in this one, along with the legendary Dianne Wiest and the rest of the ensemble. And Cody Fern? What a debut feature as a director.

And then, of course, there’s the movie’s big bad. What a chillingly memorable character design, carried masterfully by Dane DiLiegro. A mix of The Shape and The Strangers. He feels like an unstoppable force.

For fans of Levy and Rothe, get ready. Their horror legend status is reaffirmed big time here. And Mattern pairs wonderfully with them as the baby brother who all-too-often lets his sisters take the reins.

Those production feats are also heavily amplified by the film’s main trio — Jane Levy, Jessica Rothe, and Max Mattern. Putting estranged siblings in the middle of a slasher scenario is one heck of a way to remind them of what they mean to each other.
