From my last trip to the museum.
A flying phallus in the British museum. Located in the Roman section, mild mannered docents will get flustered and blush when American women come up to them and say "excuse me, where can I find a flying phallus?"

Absolutely tranced out to the Orcutt/Corsano duo last night at the Bowery Ballroom. Tortoise was great, but the PA went out mid-set, and Jeff Parker was absent, though the stand-in guitarist did a great job all things considered.

The Dropkick Murphys and Bad Religion last night in Guilford, NH played probably the tightest sets I've ever seen in my life. 3 hours of solid energy. Happy that DMs played 'Going Out in Style' for the New England crowd and absolutely happy to take my 10yo to see them for her first show!

Notable "baked potato" Tom Smith front and center during his pre-To Live and Shave in LA days. During this time Tom front Boat of with Mike Green, Carol Levy, Michael Stipe, and others. He also had DJ sets at the 40watt and Crows Nest before leaving Athens, GA for Atlanta, GA and beyond.
A scan of the June 3, 1980 article in The Red and Black. The article contains a picture without subjects named, but features a young, shirtless Tom Smith of them Boat Of, and later Peach of Immortality, To Live and Shave in LA, Pussy Galore, OHNE, and others.

"40 Watt Club entertains wavers on a shoestring"

By WILLIAM HAINES Staff writer

"The Baked Potato" and "The Sardine" are not new dances, but they do describe the heat and SRO crowds at Athens' first, exclusively new wave nightclub, The 40 Watt Club, located in what used to be The Crow's Nest atop the downtown Sub and Steak sandwich shop.

Friday night, R.E.M. and The Teeveez sweated for all they were worth in front of a capacity crowd of about 75 people packed shoulder to shoulder in an area a little larger than a living room. The 40 Watt Club has been giving Athens' new wave cognoscenti a chance to pogo in place for three weeks now, having opened its door May 9 with The Side Effects...
Crowe openly admits The 40 Watt Club operates on a shoestring budget. One ticket taker, two bartenders and a disc jockey comprise the club's total staff. Exposed pipes and bare walls underscore Crowe's minimalist attitude toward the nightclub business.

Crowe has used his first hand knowledge of New York clubs to fill the need for an Athens nightspot that serves up only new wave. Crowe hopes his connections with Pylon will eventually bring in national acts from Atlanta.

In the past few weeks, The 40 Watt Club has played host to Pylon, The Smarts, The Swindles and the Untouchables. Atlanta-based Vietnam, included on the Public Image Ltd. bill at the Agora, will play the club on Friday, June 13th.

When asked to comment on The Crow's Nest's association with laid back, cocktail music, Crowd responded, "I did my best to take everything down that was reminiscent of The Crow's Nest. I tried to hide most of that."

The 40 Watt Club is open T…

At some point 20+ years ago, Tom Smith passed a copy of this to me after one of our philosophy courses at Valdosta State University. I popped it in on my drive home not knowing what to think about it since he gave me zero warning or explanation, but it changed everything for me. Thanks Bill!

This reminds me of this screenshot I grabbed off of YouTube last week from a British travel show episode based in Hamburg, Germany. There was just something about the framing and the colors. I'd hang a painting of it.

I'd just like to point out, for no particular reason, that there was a really nice sofa in the room where they met to the left of the Pope.
A still capture from a Vatican Media video showing the Pope, in a wheelchair, meeting the United States Vice President JD Vance. The room is white, with a stone tile floor. The room has a red persian-style carpet with several ornate wooden chairs with brown-hued fabric cushions. The Vice President wears a blue suit with a yellow tie, his hands clasped in his lap. An arrow is inserted showing that this line of sight could be pointing towards a sofa to the rear-left of the Pope and his assistant. Seated beside the Vice President is a woman that is potentially serving as a translator for the conversation.
