Bearing witness in a changed, post-fire landscape. Fire and flood shape the environment; some history passes away, while other traces remain untouched. The land eventually recovers: Some of it recently, some of it long after my lifetime. #hiking #backpacking #camping #utah

We went #hiking to an obscure peak w/ a fantastic viewscape. From the summit, we could see the Abajos, La Sals, distant 13ers and 14ers, & red rock country stretching to the horizon. Incredible sunset capped off the evening. Few visit this lonely summit. Perfect for us. #Colorado #Backpacking

Joan spent four days backpacking Pictured Rocks along Lake Superior and called it her version of an all-inclusive resort: unlimited water, all-you-can-eat berries, swimming beaches, waterfalls, loons, and a lighthouse. 🙂 A trip she was glad she didn't rush. pmags.com/backpacking-...

Last October, I hiked #RhodeIsland 's ~75-mile North-South Trail as part of my walk from Canada to the Atlantic. The logistics proved harder than the hiking. :) So I made the guide I wish I'd had: maps, GPX, camping, resupply, side quests, and more. pmags.com/hiking-rhode... #hiking #backpacking

Between fires, a brief monsoon, poor AQI, and life, we haven't made it to the San Juans as much as hoped this summer. But Joan and I finally returned to our favorite #Colorado mountains for wildflowers, alpine views, and the scenery that keeps drawing us back. #hiking #backpacking

We hosted some friends. We started with an early-morning tour of the Fiery Furnace in Arches NP, then took in views from Island in the Sky in Canyonlands. Today we escaped to the La Sal Mountains, looking down at the desert far below. #hiking #moab #utah #archesnationalpark #canyonlandsnationalpark

Not a good year for backpacking in the Abajos or the San Juans, but our local mountains still offer some good opportunities for camping and hiking. And only an hour away. #hiking #camping #utah #moab #moabutah

Joan and I went to some local(ish) mountains to avoid the fires and smoke in our usual places. My first time back since 2017. The views from the 11k summits to the nearby desert were phenomenal. A quiet destination, even with smoke visible in the mountains we consider home. #hiking #camping #utah

#Hiking & #camping at the edge of the San Juans in #Colorado Storms moving in had us trade backpacks for a camping trip, but we still wandered to the edge of treeline. We also settled in with hot drinks while wearing puffies, a welcome contrast to the sweltering heat in Moab earlier in the week.

Avenza now requires a paid subscription to import georeferenced PDF maps. That's an issue, but the bigger loss may be the Avenza store: a simple way for nonprofits, agencies, and small map companies to share electronic maps. So it goes. pmags.com/avenza-enshi...

Weather shifted the plan; storms ruled out dirt roads. Found a quiet canyon camp instead with many images. Next day: floated the Gunnison with friends (~800 CFS, windy, overcast). A bit spicy, but great scenery and company. Off the river before the storm, ended with a good meal at friends’.

We changed plans. Our usual March spots were already near 90°F, so we went higher into our May country. Blooming paintbrush, green-up, and bare 11k peaks had me thinking about fire season. Flowing streams, rock art, and canyon birds gave us a bit of peace anyway. #utah #backpacking #petroglyphs
