Super busy week for plug-in solar: 25 new kit approvals, taking the total to 108 fully compliant kits, 39 of which are available to buy. Currys also launched its first kit, alongside a few smaller suppliers. As always, you can track what’s been approved and where to buy it all here.

Ofgem’s electricity price cap increased today, from 26.11p to 26.32p/kWh. 😐 It’s a small change, but every kWh of solar electricity you use yourself now saves slightly more. I’ve updated the Plugin Solar Calculator, so savings estimates now reflect the new October–December cap.

We started this week with 61 compliant UK plug-in solar kits. We finish it with 83, making this one of the busiest weeks for ENA approvals since the rules changed on 27 August. None of this week’s new kits are available to buy yet, but they should start hitting the shelves over the next few weeks.

5/6. The main frustration right now is stock. Some of the best-value kits, including City Plumbing’s sub-£500 options and the newly approved EcoFlow kits, are currently unavailable. Plenty of recently approved kits also haven’t reached retailers yet either.

4/6. Smaller UK suppliers are joining in too. The Solar Centre now has kits approved, and its website is signalling launch pricing from £330 for a 430W single-panel kit, with a second 430W panel from £150 (making them some of the best value on the market)

3/6. Some big names arrived this week too. Zendure had six SolarFlow 800 configurations approved on Monday. They may be less familiar in the UK, but they’re a major player in Europe’s balcony-solar market. EcoFlow then gained approvals yesterday.

Plug-in solar export payments are a nice bonus, but they shouldn’t be seen as the main financial benefit. The bigger saving still comes from using the electricity you generate yourself and buying less from the grid, rather than selling small amounts back.

Octopus Energy confirm plug-in solar customers can join its Prime export tariff, but only if you buy the kit from them. Prime currently pays 9p/kWh during the day. So what could exports be worth? …Around £40 a year for the 920W Octopus kit, but less than a tenner for the single-panel version.

Some encouraging signs for plug-in solar in Northern Ireland. At least 3 MLAs have now pressed Stormont for the rule changes needed to follow Great Britain, where plug-in solar became legal last month. With questions awaiting answers from the Economy Minister, we should know more very soon… ☀️

Screwfix have just gone live with their first UK-compliant plug-in solar kit. The PowerXpress 920W (90012) has a decent spec, great panels and flexible mounting options but… it’s pricey at £669 delivered 😳 Hopefully this is just the first of many kits they plan to stock…

Quiet one today. No new plug-in solar approvals or launches 👀 One useful heads-up though: City Plumbing has 3 very good-value kits on sale now, with 4 more approved but not yet launched. 2 of their kits still to come have a slightly better spec, so might be worth waiting before taking the plunge.

If anyone’s unsure about their meter, give your energy supplier a call and explain that you’re planning to connect plug-in solar. They should be able to tell you whether your existing meter is suitable or needs replacing.

Some mechanical meters can run backwards when a plug-in solar kit is connected, and may need replacing (which your supplier should do for free). The list linked below shows the affected models. Yours looks like it might be a Sangamo Weston S200-16, which is listed and would need replacing.

Yes - that’s going to catch a lot of people out unfortunately. But glad you checked (many won’t, hence why we upped the visibly of that warning on the site) You only need to replace the single RCD that is protecting the circuit you plan on using though - so might not be as pricey as you think.

That right. Self-install plug in solar products get the standard 20% VAT rate. Only professionally installed rooftop systems qualify for the 0% rate.

You can have up to 2000W of panels under the new regs, but the microinverter limits the output to 800W. Having larger panel capacity helps the system reach its 800W maximum more often (helpful on cloudy days or during winter)

Thanks for the share. Big day for plug-in solar today. City plumbing slashed the pricing of their 3 fully compliant plug-in kits. £432 for their cheapest 940W kit through to £468 for the 1030W kit. Finally the pricing we were all promised. Octopus also gained compliance for their 920W kit.

A lot more plug-in solar kits have been registered as 'compliant' over the past week. On the day it was permitted in Britain, only 7 products were listed (just a few available to buy). Now there are 46 compliant kits. Progress! Still expensive (esp. compared to Germany) but it's getting better...
