2/ I've had the pleasure of using Plinky on my Mac for months, and I really love it. Enjoy a redesigned sidebar, keyboard shortcuts, and a better save experience everywhere you save links. And these aren't just Mac improvements, every nice touch and improvement has made it's way to the iPad too.

I highly recommend everyone read this tremendous essay from @joanwestenberg.com on the case for optimism. It’s up to us to build the world we want, even when we see many reasons it might not happen — because sometimes it does.
In 1903, Simon Newcomb - a professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins and probably the most credentialed scientist in the country
- wrote a widely-read essay arguing that powered heavier-than-air flight was a practical impossibility. And on December 17 of that same year, Wilbur and Orville Wright flew four times at Kitty Hawk. The longest flight lasted 59 seconds and covered 852 feet.
Newcomb never revised his position.
Pessimism is more accurate in the short term
- almost always, I'll give it that. Things do go wrong in roughly the ways people predict they will. But optimism is more productive over decades. Optimism is the thing that generates attempts, and without attempts nothingBlind cheerfulness ignores evidence, crashes planes, builds the Humane Al Pin and bankrupts companies. Nobody wants that.
But the choice to look at bad data and act anyway, because sitting still is the one move that guarantees the bad outcome, is a noble one.
The most dangerous idea I keep running into is that there is nothing to be done. It's the one idea that, if enough people hold it, comes true
- and I refuse to treat that as a serious intellectual position. I refuse to let Quiet Quitting become the dominant intellectual model of our age.
I would rather be wrong about what we're capable of than right about why we shouldn't bother trying…..

It's taken a lot of work but I'm excited to announce that Plinky is coming to the Mac on April 22nd. In a world of half-hearted web apps and vibecoded slop, I doubled down on making Plinky a Mac app that feels right at home on the Mac. And I can't wait for you to try it out.

The latest Plinky beta brings a bunch of improvements to the Mac and iPad. Say hello to a new sidebar design that feels right at home on macOS, along with a brand-new pinned section to help organize Folders and Tags. And of course I've added a myriad of keyboard shortcuts across both platforms.

This a great read about the looming cultural crisis around AI, but also a meaningful anthropological lens into how SF and DC have different roots yet very alike. jasmi.news/p/ai-populism
Black text on a white background. The text reads: "I was not initially inclined to feel very bad about data centers, which have existed as long as the internet has. Much of the infrastructure of our modern world is not pretty, and that’s OK with me because we all reap the gains. But as I spent a morning driving around Loudoun County—the data center capital of the US, which houses roughly one data center in every two square miles—with photojournalist Stephen Voss, I finally got the distate. The data centers are just so close to where people live, looming over suburban backyards and sports fields and sidewalks and schools. Two years of loud construction, two decades of noise. You stand there and hear them hissing, whirring, rattling, beeping. Some have cheap American flags draped over the side, and others are painted a bland ecru, a flimsy attempt at fading into the background. In compute hubs like Loudoun County, trees have been chopped down and high-voltage transmission towers put up. Mazes of power lines hang over roads like steel cobwebs."A screenshot of a news article with black text on a white background. The text discusses AI regulation and mentions tech billionaires, political figures, and AI-related concerns.

Also the Thai government will teach you English, train you to cook, and even offer financing for you to open a Thai restaurant abroad to help spur their national project. vinepair.com/cocktail-cha...
Calling the Global Thai initiative a success would be the understatement of the century.
In the two decades since the program launched, the number of Thai restaurants worldwide has more than tripled, jumping from roughly 5,500 in 2002 to well over 17,000 as of January 2024. In the United States, the presence of Thai restaurants has expanded by 250 percent in the same time frame, swelling from approximately 2,000 to just under 7,000. With only 300,000 Thai-Americans living in the States, the country's cuisine accounts for the highest population-to-restaurant ratio of any cultural group. To achieve this goal, the government implemented dozens of programs across several bureaus, each of which was designed to give citizens the resources they need to operate a restaurant abroad. The Ministry of Labour's Department of Skill Development (DSD) started offering cooking classes for those looking to develop their knowledge of the cuisine and prowess in the kitchen. The courses also included lessons on how to
purchase and preserve ingredients, maintain a safe work environment, and operate a restaurant. Students were even taught basic English skills to take with them abroad.

1/ Introducing, Plinky 5. Every pixel of Plinky has been rethought and redesigned for Apple’s beautiful new Liquid Glass. From the moment you open it, Plinky feels right at home on iOS 26, while staying distinctly Plinky. But I went far beyond that to make saving links faster and more intuitive.

One of my favorite — yet subtle — improvements in Plinky 5.0 is this much more refined banner style. Plinky should be colorful, but a pop of color can make as much of a statement as a dominant color. The app still feels distinctly different than other link saving apps, but more discretely so.

Your daily life will feel more controllable and legible than it does now.
Nearly everything will feel more personalized to you, ready for you whenever you need it, in just the way you like it.
This won't be because of one big thing, but because of unfathomable numbers of intelligent actions taken by computers that have learned how to use com-puters. Every product you buy, every device you use, every service you employ, will be brought to you by trillions of computers talking to themselves and to one another, making decisions, exercising judgments, pursuing goals.
