Edmund: I then leapt on the opportunity to test you. I asked if you were a fan of one of PL challengers: Arsenal, Man City, or Hull… Mary: Well? Edmund: You failed to spot that only two of those are PL challengers Mary: You swine! Melchett: That’s right — City have no chance under Maresca!

Bruno's ownership dropping quite quickly after scoring a hattrick and looking incredible in the second half shows how hard it is to get ahead in FPL these days. 5 years ago he might go up 0.2m this week even as the sharps move over to Haaland.

Highlight of the "welcome back to FPL" was owning Thiago as he took a penalty against Kinsky, who I am also playing on the BB. If he scores I get +4 for Thiago (plus possible bonus), although -1 for Kinsky. If it's saved I get +5 for Kinsky and -2 for Thiago. So 3 points either way, right. RIGHT?

I am typically someone who tries to hold on to chips, perhaps too much so, but this season I think there is a really compelling case to not only considering an early wildcard, but actively picking your team on the assumption you will WC as early as GW3.
Draft FPL lineup for gameweek one: Verbruggen, Kinsky, White, Calafiori, Maguire, O'Reilly, Williams, Fernandes, Mbeumo, Tzolis, Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Isak, Joao Pedro, Calvert-Lewin

Four defender injuries but longer term I don't particularly want to get rid of any of them.

I really like Unai Emery but "are Villa in the title race" seems like the kind of question that will age very poorly.

The games in BC are comparatively cheap at "only" $370 for the cheapest tier, though as others have pointed out, the number of these value tickets is so limited that you'll likely need to have also paid out for a premium membership from the Canadian FA to even have a chance at "winning" them.

Despite living a quick ferry ride away from two host cities, I already had minimal interest in going to the World Cup given the absolute state of FIFA, but even I was shocked by the ticket prices. Not only outrageously high but also idiotically tiered.

It seems to me that he is already a very solid pick and even with some time at right back, his numbers still track well against other midfielders who cost more and are receiving transfer attention right now:

PLFantasy @plfantasy.bsky.social · 12/12/2025
However, his positional flexibility (a) will help him stay on the pitch for the longer, even during the busy holiday period, and (b) has caused some noise in his data which might mean he is being somewhat undervalued. Let's split his mins between those at right back and in midfield:
Table showing Szoboszlai's data when playing at right back or in midfield. The table shows that his goal threat is much higher when in midfield, although his assist threat is lower. The difference is exaggerated when we include his Champions League data alongside that from the Premier League

In normal circumstances I don't think I would be in a rush to bring in a player like Szoboszlai as he doesn't have a very high ceiling, his team aren't playing great (albeit still 6th in xG), and his position in the team isn't locked down.
Liverpool player Dominic Szoboszlai makes a "phone call" gesture after scoring a goal.

And given the current discourse, and while we're sorting tables, who on this list is considered to be having a good season and who is considered to be an absolute disaster is interesting (recognizing that there is more to a good player than this one narrow stat)

We're still probably in small sample territory but the list of top-10 npxG+xA players looks . . . weird?

His positioning was laughably terrible for an FPL asset, compared here to Tyler Adams, Mosies Caicedo, and Declan Rice. They specifically made note on commentary of one occasion Bruno got forward as "a rare forray", a phrase typically reserved for when Craig Dawson runs up the pitch a bit.

I think yesterday's Bruno Fernandes performance was the absolute quintessential Bruno game that he will struggle to top all year. In the *same game* he somehow managed to prove right both those who hate him, and those who love him as an FPL asset.

I was pretty locked into 4/5 def and 4/5 mid for while but went round and round on the 5th mid spot and the front two. I was on Elliot Anderson for the longest time but liked the short term upside for Reijnders. Front two could have been Mateta or Strand Larsen.

I don't love how they colored a Liberal minority as blue! Still around ~80% for a Lib gov't but more like 50:50 whether that's majority or minority

Remember those tough decisions last week whether to sub-out your 4 or 5 pointer for a great Wednesday option? Not so much this week. 🤢 The new way to prove I have been hacked or kidnapped is if you ever see Theo Hernandez anywhere near a fantasy team with my name on it (I dont play Serie A)

Would have liked to do something more interesting, but injury risks forced a very boring Haaland and Hien to Mbappe and Zappacosta. Hoping to just hold ground this week at around 400 OR and then try and climb a few spots in the run in.

Verbruggen is the sixth keeper to notch a Premier League assist this season (Ederson, Flekken, Pickford, Leno, Sels). These players would be third on their team in assists if they played for Man Utd.

NASA say the asteroid has about a 2% chance of hitting earth, which is about the same odds as Nwaneri scoring from here. This doesn't feel sufficiently low to give one much comfort.

I have a very poorly timed work call during the hour after #UCLfantasy lineups are released and the deadline so need to largely settle on a team now. I'm on Limitless and currently landing here. Biggest questions are probably Foden and maybe Olise and then whether to play an Inter defender.

Locked in for #UCLFantasy MD7. Really didn't like any options available for Saka and ended up with Trossard. It's a one week as I'll play LL next MD. Might be a tough week with plenty of WCs and LL around together with potential rotation risks. A grey arrow would be fine. Overall rank: 287

No doubt Cunha is outperforming his underlying data, but the creeping narrative that he is some kind of Almiron isn't fair. He was a very legitimate, analytics pick when many bought him in ~GW10. Hard to see how his production is notably flawed whereas Mbeumo is a valued, underrated asset

Conversely, the games in which Forest have given up more than 1.0 xG have come against better sides. This is obviously intuitive, but most teams don't follow such a clear split.

PLFantasy @plfantasy.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
One name that doesn't really pop at all in the models is Matz Sels. However, Forest have been really good at limiting bad teams this season. Here are the games in which they have limited the opponent to 1.0 xG or less. The shock result at Anfield stands out, but otherwise these are weaker attacks

Like everyone else - except normal people not looking at @fbref.com at 8:30pm on xmas eve - I am looking at replacements for Saka and the shot data from Ødegaard is a concern. He's managed 13 shots for the season in over 9 90s. 1.43 sh/90 is lower than Gusto, Gvardiol and Porro.

Fulham did use a back five at the Etihad, and while they lost the game, they did out xG City 2.6 to 1.6 so it's something Silva could look to again. Castagne was available for that game but Iwobi was preferred in the defensive line.

PLFantasy @plfantasy.bsky.social · 20/12/2024
But, Robinson does have some very real factors in his favour. His xMins are absolutely guaranteed whereas it wouldn't be *amazing* to see Silva do something unusual at right back (wing backs for example). Also possible that Castagne sits back in build up and allows Robinson to push on much more.

Have folks explained why almost everyone leaving Ajax in the last 5 years has been a total disaster? The obvious answers might be that they had particularly good coaches to maximize not great players' talent, or they achieved amazing success which drummed up demand, neither of which seem convincing.

Confirmation bias is when I see this table and increase the likelihood of bringing Amad in, despite the fact that half of these other players were all terrible FPL assets!

For completeness, this is what central attackers have done at home against Leicester. Not sure there's a ton to draw on here as no one here is the same level of Isak and those who are close have tended to do well (as expected!).

Review suggests selling Cunha to Isak this week, slightly ahead of my preferred move of shifting funds around to target Trent. Selling before a home game against Ipswich seems risky, so I took a look at how central attacking players (#9 and #10) have done at home to McKenna's team:
