Excellent article! I love the first reason of giving new players something easy to learn. Reminds me of what Mark Rosewater says about "why bad MTG cards exist", one reason is to give new players some clear deck building wins in a complex game. A great read!

You can do a lot with very little. I'm running my server on a 35W tiny desktop with an i3-8100T with 8GB of RAM. It can run 24/7, and saves me from keeping my desktop on all of the time

I've learned so much from the Gunvein tutorial! It not only taught me skills but actually how to enjoy the genre more, the lines about macro vs micro dodging really stuck with me. I'd love a beat em up interactive tutorial in a similar fashion

You get the benefit of going into a cohesive and beautiful setting but without all the baggage of telling a story with cutscenes and dialog which isn't appropriate for a lot of experiences.

Visual storytelling and minimal storytelling is amazing. Ikaruga has a ton of background, a lot of thought put into enemy design (they all have names of birds) it has a whole bunch of human characters and stories between them, but it has the wisdom to know the player doesn't need to know all that.

Also I do worry about the fact that part 1 and part 2 aren't randomized. I did find part 2 easier and worry that an unfounded causal link will be established on the middle part tutorial and performance increase for the second part. It's hard to separate what's due to the image set and information

most fighting game players spend most of their time getting blown out. most STG players spend their time dying miserably with bombs in stock. these experiences are available to you, second 1, day 1. there is nothing those guys get that you can't get, right this moment. you need invest nothing.
