Belarusian writer and former political prisoner Maxim Znak speaks with platformB about language, survival, and the resilience of Belarusian culture under authoritarian pressure. Read the full interview by Olga Bubich: www.platformb.art/work/belarus...
Language can be a liberating territory of self-expression or a mechanism of control. For Belarusian writer, lawyer, and former political prisoner Maxim Znak, during the five years he spent in prison (nearly three of which–in incommunicado mode, devoid of contact with the outside world), languages became his primary tool of survival and a space for creative discovery.

From reading Kafka and Remarque in the original to learning Arabic and Hebrew scripts and observing the nuances of human behavior in the »limbo« of pre-trial detention centers, Znak’s relationship with the written word is defined by sensitivity, meticulous attention to detail, humor, and wit.

Following the autumn 2024 wave of state censorship, which saw the burning of foreign-language books and Belarusian classics alike, Znak’s story reflects the broader struggle of Belarusian culture under authoritarian pressure. Now writing exclusively in Belarusian, he views the condition of exile as an opportunity to preserve and popularize a culture that for decades has been erased at home.

platformB welcomes Maxim Znak’s liberation and the beginning of a new safe chapter of his life in Europe. Joining him during his residency at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin in July 2026, we discuss his short story collection Zekameron, its literary homages to Boccaccio and Dante, the art of deciphering human emotions in overcrowded cells, and why resilience with a smile remains our strongest shield against destruction.

The existence of people in exile is almost always mediated by their families: we leave them behind with little hope for reunion, flee together and watch relationships transform under pressure, or form new bonds – through unexpected love or pragmatic necessity.
