In 2023, our community development project launched in Ty Sign, working alongside & listening to the community. Connections & stronger relationships with local services were built. The project shows how a different approach can improve wellbeing & address community-level trauma. 👉 buff.ly/gXSfv6R

Embedding health prevention in all policy development, including through a trauma-informed approaches to homelessness, can impact our wider approach and the outcomes for people in Wales.

The inclusion of a clear focus on the prevention of ill health is also welcomed. We believe that much of our mental health is socially determined, whether that's through our relationships, what's happened to us in childhood or factors like poverty or homelessness.

Platfform welcomes the announcement of the Programme for Government. The commitment to transform mental health services to Open Access, same-day services is potentially a key moment in how we approach mental health services in Wales. We, alongside the third sector, are ready to play our role.

We know from our work the difference same day support can make. We welcome yesterday's commitment by the Deputy Minister for Social Care, Mental Health and Women's Health at the Health and Social Care Committee for transforming our mental health services in Wales to an Open Access model.

The ODDESSI trial is another piece of solid evidence that we need to step towards a system that recognises the impact of our experiences, our circumstances, and the human interconnections around us.

This approach will strengthen the Open Access same day approach already being rolled out here in Wales. The trial results published in the Lancet found that this approach improves recovery, quality of life and satisfaction.

Open Dialogue is a relational approach that involves a person’s support network, relevant family members, friends and others that they trust. We’ve been campaigning for change in how mental health services are organised and we’re excited to see these results launched. Read more buff.ly/RoEFbz4

We should all feel safe to hold healthy, informed debates. Dr Lindsay Cordery-Bruce, WCVA’s Chief Executive, argues that scrutiny is essential, but targeting people who work for voluntary organisations threatens the public debate on which democracy depends. wcva.cymru/views/debate...

At Platfform we believe that connection only happens when we listen closely, with curiosity. This applies to how we work as well as in our conversations with stakeholders. There's an increasing trend where charity workers are being targeted online because of what they do. This is not acceptable.

From our work we know that helpful mental health support is compassionate, easy to access, and close to home. It should help people understand what’s happened to them and what they’re going through. It means they feel less alone, and can build ways forward that make sense for their life.

The Deputy Minister said she wants mental health support in Wales to be easier and faster to access, and more focused on helping people before things reach crisis point. It means moving towards support that is available on the same day, and built around what people actually need in that moment.

We were particularly pleased to hear support for a more relational approach to health and public services — one that recognises people are not defined by ACEs. This is at the heart of Platfform’s work, and we see every day how relationships help people rebuild, heal, and thrive.

There was a clear cross-party agreement that Wales needs more trauma-informed, preventative support. Members, including Lynne Neagle, a long-term advocate in this area, spoke of the progress that has been started in Wales, yet there is still much more to be done.
