I'm back with new handles :). Bubbinga(yes it's that red), Olive and oxidized Padouk. African blackwood(shit is heavy and hard as rock), Nambian rosewood and Canarywood. Also I made an magnetic insert for when smooth rotation is needed.

Testing pure black primer for 1:35 military. + higher color range than with white - PITA to cover all small black patches, may look unfinished -> I prefer it to zenithal -> may try some less black colors -> will try it for sure, should be excellent for darker uniforms

Testing 3rd gen and ionics, I'm happy with them tho I would prefer to not have to do this. And I still had to finish with vallejo, bc ak's samples doesn't match real paint at all.

Or I will paint it whole in portland stone, from '42. Will be far easier to weather.

Fuck it, I'm repainting. - I went with dark wash/dirt firts, that stained the whole surface and it was hard to put dust over it - I shouldn't put wash around each rivet, that emphasized them too much - green should be put first not last, yellow and whatever they call silvergrey I'm not sure yet

I switched to AKs and old Vallejos and damn, it so much better. No fighting, no stains, no thick paint and detail feels much better. Although colors I did chose are abhorrent, pastel peach, orange rust and tan.

Drying time can be speed up with mediums, but no, I don't like working with oils.

Well, I put much more effort in debugging my hobbies than my job. I'm just pissed that I didn't noticed right away, and wasted a lot of time repainting figures. At least last issue is identified so progress can be made. Except I have several tanks to finish :/

Also huge amount of matting agent, which is bigger than pigment particles, they put into these paints makes them harder to dilute, at some point they break and became very chalky. Yeah, they improved coverage but at the same time made them unusable for glazing, as paints and as a painted surface.

Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Matte finish also makes shadows less intense and figure more flat due to a way how surface disperses light - on broader area than e.g. satin paint. This gives that 'frosty' look to dark paints.

Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
To put it simply, it is paint fault: they have way too much matting agent. Thing is, when dried paint is too matte, surface is very rough it pulls paint in every direction. That makes brush strokes more visible and transitions sharper. Adding more mediums won't help, it makes paint thicker.

This wasn't an issue year ago when I painted leather jacket too. See, here higlights are clean, I had easier time painting faces, blending is smoother and details are better. I remember it was also more enjoyable, there wasn't that much fighting.

Few days ago I complained that I have to play whack-a-mole with brushstrokes on volumetrics. Yeah, there was reason for that, I had this issue on mind for quite some time, but it clocked only when I looked at this photo: Do you see highlights that look like bird's poop?

ZTZ 100 is completed, the only mod was basically adding missing wires. I also put some mud, mostly for practice. #WIP #scalemodels

I folded and finally bought 60mm macro lens. Apparently regular lenses, even if sharp, aren't sharp at close distances. 60mm also offers better perspective and frame fill. It was frustrating to get proper shots, if it was only for socials, I wouldn't care, but I need them to review what I did.

? I did not critique anything. I know nothing about photography too, there is this field 'product photography' where professionals are shooting similar objects to our models, it may be worth checking.

Sad true is that people don't look, on one scale forum, engine rescales photos to postcard's size and no one is complaining. Too me your IS-2 photos were nice, I would just add a bit vertical space to keep proportions closer to at least 16:9. If you don't mind comparison:

Hard question, it could depend how do you intent for a photo to be viewed: on a phone or 27'' monitor. I usually leave some space for relief and shoot more closeups.

BecauseI have enough shit to open my own shop, but I'm kinda losing interest the moment I but box on the shelf. Always looking for something new. Anyway I'm going to finish that nude demoness and pause minipainting for a few days, I'm starting to get burned out with painting almost every evening.

Aand I'm out of the parts to glue, there is only some wires to add, some gap filling and rescribing left. I think Takom could put a bit more effort like resolve some parts better or assure better positioning of elements. It makes me dig into modern stuff more, like M10 Booker. Someday.

It looks like I will be able to paint it in the upcoming week :D It has good color scheme, I like painting and weathering sandy colors.

I was working on the Bulldog when I touched raw plastic of a broken roof support. I realized I hadn't built anything in months, suddenly I found myself feeling severe withdrawal symptoms, I had to open a new kit or go crazy. So ZTZ 100, seems to be easy kit, no base, desert camo, no figures.

More wood for handles, I even got some freebies.

A bit of exhibitionism. I've finally bought some pinboards, hang shelves for speakers and now I have whole desk clear. While on this I bought more plants for eye relief. Last photos while it's in pristine condition.

Rendering volumes is like playing whack-a-mole with brush marks.

Why people put their model's photos through AI? Apart it being disgusting, it makes their job look worse, toaster puts much more details...

I'm putting sand on Stuart, trying to blend a tractor with a base and I'm wondering why I cant get proper colors with 2021 camera..

Woah, steam powered tractor, these things are so cool.

Just because it looks better to some people, you should not mindlessly do that. Besides, if a factory delivered something like that during wartime, heads would roll for sabotage.

Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
This thin here? It's not steel, it's corrosion and layers of paint. Second one? It was pulled from a river and restored from scraps, surviving hatch is heavy rusted, it's not a texture of a vehicle.
130
Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
FFS, rolled steel armour should not have any kind of texture with raised details. Not even the frontal plate of a Tiger II, indentations, roll marks if you need but not cast texture, rolls can't produce that. By the time of WWII they were already building huge steel ships for 100 years.

I had brushes setup for 1/35 soldiers where synthetics were enough for prep work. And are still ok for painting larger non-skin areas. Skin needs that smooth blend and ability to alternate between broad stroke and point tip. I found longer brushes to be more handy in general.

Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Paints: On zenithal, VMC German orange wash to give it some pinkish base. VGC Succubus skin + VMC Red leather for shadows paints above + VMC Sunny skintone + VMC Basic skin for midtones * I didn't put much thought into selecting them, it's my first time when I got so far with that big areas of skin

Bigger and longer kolinsky brush helps a lot(14x2mm) with blending, also retarder is a must together with letting paint dry otherwise brush just scrubs it - the problem I had with synthetics. Turn out tool matters a bit.

From figures, crews are done and wait for blending with tanks and bases. I need something bigger, learn something new and test myself. I also crave some fantasy colors. So I have this four, I will try Desert Foxu bc I want to try how painfull 120mm is, and one of this girls.

Holidays gone and work is just wasting everybody's time. With blockers removed, I need to select what I will be working on. From models it will be Bulldog and Stuart, as they are the most advanced. Lots of details to paint and weathering with oils. I miss building, but I can't afford it now.

Because ai doesn't simply paint it, almost all ai based image processors, like upscallers/denoisers/colorizers are generating new image, using original as mere reference. They aren't constrained by geometry, logic or anything. You can treat original image as a more detailed prompt for generator.

DIY corner: brush rack from olive and brush rest from palisander santos. Olive wood is so pretty

Continuing my rant, bc I'm not done. Two figures, both from popular sculpting groups. Left one is good, even small details on hat are more brush friendly, where on right one I barely can distinguish details, too many spikes and strings. Manageable, but would be more approachable with less noise.

In resin printing yes it's hard, different market I guess. Tabletop oriented DM Stash or Primal Collectibles have a bit more tolerable stuff. Traditional studios like Mindworks have some although pricey as F, PanzerArt has a line of 75mm medieval/fantasy. Hunting for that is hard, limited runs.
020
Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Basically my issue is, even if a lot of figures is designed for 75/90/120mm a lot of this details is hard to paint and doesn't even look good after painting. Especially these tiny metal parts that shine nicely on renders. It's no fun to paint that, it's a chore.
130
Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
And nudity, I like erotica but these blatant figures that flood the market, just tits and pussy out, not even in interesting pose? F this. I want some pinup art that has some taste not thisss. Anatomy is bad, why these figures have to have so disproportionate bodies? Why 90mm fig has 75mm torso?
130
Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
I understand that it's aimed at american collectors, that paint with airbrush in 1/6th scale, but come on. Give something to common minipainters too.
130
Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Like, what is wrong wit these ridiculous armour designs? Why not make something simple? Why breastplate needs to be covered fully in ornaments? Why there is no ordinary clothed people? It's either nude, bags or skintight.
130
Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
I was looking for printed 120mm fantasy figure and I came to conclusion that these figures aren't sculpted for painting at all. Just to look good on renders. Too many details, lack of empty spaces, full of noise, lack of logic, ornaments everywhere, tiny metal parts. Transparent fire/magic effects

When the day, when I will be able to get consistent results comes, I will. What I can advice is to ditch GW terminology of highlights etc. and learn proper theory of light rendering - gamedev has that nice thing called PBR, it explains a lot about skin and materials.

Kalor @plasticpizza.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
No, not wash, too thin paint will break and run everywhere and leave tea stains. I usually check on my hand, thin but not runny and not too thick and not too much. Glaze medium helps. But the best way is to paint midtones first, shadows and then slowly bring colors and render lights.

I wasn't going to post it until I finish, but damn, this face turned out so good. I finally managed to break away from cold red shadows with: tan(warm, muted red), brown&red beiges, a bit of cork, elf skintone(warm yellow) and pink highlights. Figure by PanzerArt. #WIP
