A bunch of space nerds reshared my last post about the milky way. I can also confirm that the VLA is still there and still VL.
VLA up close and personal. A large radio dish against a blue sky with scattered clouds.Standing in a field of giant dishes.Mostly desert scrub on the side of the road, but a bunch of white circles show the approach to the VLA

This quote made the rounds a decade ago and it's equally true today.
A screenshot of text, which reads:

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”

and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”

and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.

@wolfskulljack.bsky.social went above and beyond with the mystery bag. Would definitely buy these any chance I get.

That market cap chart from the article is brutal.
Market Cap chart showing the value of Allbirds falling from 4 billion USD to 22 million USD over the course of 4 years. The falloff is dramatic, losing 3/4 of the value in the first 6 months and declining ever since.

Really enjoying these. Did one that was slightly more intentional than my last one.
A silly frog like creature with sharp teeth on a blue background. Watercolor.

I happened to have a green smear from using a sketchbook as a place to rest some things I've been painting. It looked vaguely wrongfroggish so here ya go.

Every time it gets really windy outside this fox comes running up from the dark recesses of my brain.
Meme: It heckin wimdy.

I was so upset when they started adding features to notepad. It had one job.
It's a Meme, written in Notepad, using a bunch of the new formatting crap they've added to notepad. The header and footer of the document are crammed full of modern junk demonstrating the point.

Text reads:

STOP UPDATING NOTEPAD
- TEXT WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GIVEN UNORDERED LISTS
- YEARS OF DEFAULT APP yet NO REAL-WORLD USE FOUND FOR BASIC FORMATTING OPTIONS
- Wanted to format anyway for a laugh? We had a tool for that: it was caclled "WORDPAD"
- "Yes please give me LINKS in my file. Please give me HEADERS." - Statements dreamed up by the utterly Deranged

LOOK at what Microsoft has been demanding your Respect for all this time, with all the programming language & technology we built for them
(This is REAL Notepad, made by REAL Microsoft):

?????? ??????????? ??????????????????????

"Hello I would like TABLES in a future update"

They have played us for absolute fools

My halloween mostly involved sittig very still inside a 7ft inflatable hippo costume and standing up as kids got to the candy table. Pure delight.

@beannoneya.bsky.social wants retro dollhouse coffee table for her little retro radio to sit on? She gets it. Not sure why I always end up with my models upside down in Fusion, and got a refresher on the loft tool to get the legs to work right (hidden bodies were straight legs).

Kiddo pulled out the Stardew Valley cookbook and wanted to make the farmer's breakfast, so here we go. Arugula salad with roasted parsnips and 3-egg gruyere omelet. Seasoned with garlic, salt, pepper, fresh tarragon, parsley and chives. Tastes like spring. Best omelet I've ever made. Delish. A++

I followed a simple tutorial that was a very simple free-form exercise, and something weird happened - I liked doing it. I'm in my mid-40s. I've spent my whole life hating everything I ever tried to draw because it didn't look right. I was in a perpetual state of "now draw the rest of the owl".
An old joke about drawing owls. The text reads: "How to draw an owl"
1 Draw some circles (two circles are shown)
2 Draw the rest of the fucking owl (a fully drawn and shaded owl is shown).

Whenever I see a truly terrible beef wellington recipe, I think of Gordon Ramsay making his "trackside frito pie" which was a total abomination, and I think that I should make a youtube video response wherein I make "Gordon's Beef Wellington" and it's just a bunch of things like this.
A can of Vienna Sausages sits next to a Twinkie on a plate. The Twinkie is bitten in half, with half a Vienna Sausage on the inside.

As someone with a daily drawing/painting practice who has just added a daily cycling practice, this hit home.
A 4 panel comic by nellucnhoj.com

Panel 1: a bike wheel with the text: "Yesterday I went cycling for the first time in twelve years"

Panel 2: a foot on a pedal "I thought to myself, John, John you should draw a comic about this"

Panel 3: a hand on a bike grip: "Not only to mark the occasion, but also to use it as an excuse to get over your lack of confidence in drawing a person riding a bike"

Panel 4: a cloud behind a person in a bike helmet with the bike cropped out of the frame. "Then I thought to myself nah, naaaaahh, feck that"

It's a somewhat visual joke in that only 3 components of the bike are ever shown, and there's no drawing of a full bike + rider in the comic.

Oh, see the alt-text if you need it explained.
A double-headed green arrow points to both Alice and Bob. A blue line comes off the center and goes to "A - The Atlantic".

To explain: Alice and Bob are typically used as example persons for explaining random cryptography examples. This chart shows the Atlantic as a "man in the middle" or someone who can read their communications. It's a reference to the whole Hegseth SignalGate thing in the press right now.

What a mess.

WIP - got some new notebooks and figured I'd do a big project using all of them. I'm a beginner, been playing with watercolors for a few months now and generally feel pretty good about how this one is going.
A cobalt blue tarantula painted in watercolors across 6 notebooks. Rough blocking, shading and highlights are in but it's still blocky and lacks details.

Today's hike: Tsankawi Loop Trail. A really pretty hike along the edge of a cliff. We took it easy and only did about a half hour on the trail today but it was still a really nice hike.

Today's hike: Pueblo Loop Trail at Bandelier National Monument. There are ladders along the trail that allow you to climb up into the ancestral Pueblo cliff homes. This photo looks down on the ruins of Tyuonyi from one of them. Easy hike, well maintained park, lots to see and explore.

I just can't get over the way she looked at him when he went on his rant about how we're gonna bulldoze Gaza. I do wonder when/if those around him will start to realize that they've goofed.

This feels really appropriate today, as the freeze of grant money has released a lot of leopards to eat a lot of faces.
A single-pane cartoon by Tom Toro published in the New Yorker. It shows a man in a ripped up suit next to a few kids around a fire. Everyone is disheveled. A cityscape lies in ruins behind them. Wow. Jarring is a great word for it. Each one is like hitting a speedbump so fast your teeth clack together.
The joke is mostly visual, in that the line by bouquetoftwelve is rendered in the font described by ommanyte.

ommanyte: I'm going to make a new font called TImes New Bastard
ommanyte: It's Times New Roman but every seventh letter is jarringly sans serif
boutquetoftwelve: [in the described font] It's Times New Roman but every seventh letter is jarringly sans serif
