A sea of gunmetal gray and pristine white holding locked at attention on a stage where their Lord is set to appear.
Each of them grips in their hand a letter wrapped in red chord and sealed in gold that summons them by name to appear. A cross section of Elysium, young fresh faced youths stand beside their seniors; the lowest laborer stands shoulder to shoulder with the daughters of the rich and powerful. One and all they were are the Chosen, conscripts called upon by Lord Ares xerself to serve.
Before them the stage loops large at the north end of the mustering field, crimson red banners furled and braziers unlit. A pair of eidolons stand at locked attention, without pilots they are merely show pieces to impress the gravity of the future. Though it is sure that each of the assembled conscripts knows what will be asked of them, it can never hurt to reinforce such dedications.
The sun rises, intensifying into the early mornings and Lord Ares still has not blessed the Chosen with xer presence. No attendants come for them nor a commander to relieve them. The gathered stand straight as the columns of Elysium that reach to the sky. Here under the baking sun their sweat runs like rivers; white shirts become almost translucent, gray pants become black. Their feet cook in the black leather.
With no breeze to cool them, and no water or food, a few of the conscripts begin to sway. Gently at first, like great trees in refreshing wind. One by one the great trees become fragile, swaying further, stumbling to keep their balance. Still the recruits hold firm, backs straight and legs locked.
