I am still a bit excited that the research for which this years Noble Prize for Physiology or Medicine was rewarded has a plant link. So of course, I go into that in this week’s Plant & Zo weekly roundup. #PlantScience

We like to think that new crop varieties are developed without modern techniques. But the honest story is that most are, even if they are not gene edited or genetically modified. So how do plant breeders now-a-days develop new crop varieties? plantenzo.substack.com/p/from-wild-... #PlantScience

But what about the roots, do roots respond in a similar way when wounded. Afterall hungry insects don’t restrict themselves to the above ground tissues. The authors of this week’s paper highlight set out to find out more. 👇 #PlantScience

When a leaf detects that it is wounded, it quickly sends a signal to the other leaves. When visualised this signal is a wave that travels through the above ground tissue. 👇 #PlantScience

A new technique might make studying the genomics of slow reproducing plants easier. In this week’s paper highlight I discuss how this new technique gave the researchers who developed it some clues on which genes are involved in regulating the transition from vegetative growth to reproductive growth.

Then you come across an article that shows you the exact opposite, that there is still a plant hormone to be discovered and that even without its discovery scientists have already mapped out parts of how it regulates plant growth and development. More about this in this week’s paper highlight. 2/3
