Botanical excursion with Šuspa was successful despite the bad weather, including roasting sausages. We found Ptelea trifoliata (native to North America), apparently planted close to the camp in the Cerna River valley.

Last week, the second myrmecological workshop was held in Jihlava, organised by Klára and Pavel Bezděčka. Marie Konečná spoke about the interactions between mutualistic ants and myrmecochorous plants and discussed possibilities for future research from the perspective of ants.

The general message was that most of the functions, such as productivity, decomposition or carbon cycling, are maintained by dominant species, though diversity appears to be important for the long-term stability of these functions.

While decomposability of healthy versus senescing organs was comparable, strikingly, their decomposability depend more on senescence types (natural and drought-induced). These types may induce different physiological responses (based on traits) and thus decomposability.

Estimating belowground decomposability is still a challenge due to methodolgical barriers. Thus, we investigated the effect of experimental (i.e. drought-induced) and natural senescence and associated traits on the decomposability of roots and rhizomes of four Carex species.

We weeded three experiments in just half a day. There was an unprecedentedly small amount of biomass taken from plots. This reflects not only community stabilisation since the experiment's establishment (1994, 2016, and 2023, respectively), but also the effect of the dry year.

Asynchrony in species fluctuations and the averaging effect of species diversity emerged as the strongest stabilising mechanisms. Asynchrony consistently stabilised communities across climates, independent of species richness.

Drought resistance drives the temporal stability of winter annual populations in desert and Mediterranean climates, while delayed germination is a driver exclusively in deserts. This challenges the assumption of delayed germination as the sole protective trait for these species.

Despite the harsh conditions, random processes had a more dominant role in local assembly than environmental filtering. The presence of biological soil crusts and a dominant perennial grass species (Macrochloa tenacissima) both generally increased local diversity of the annuals.

Grass effects on Carex were similar in final biomass but differed in growth dynamics. Competitive effect strength on the grass depended on neighbouring sedge identity. Competition was mostly asymmetric, favouring the dominant grass competitor.

Aleš showed at #IAVS2026 that the loss of plant species from a community affects biomass stability through three main mechanisms: dominance, species asynchrony, and the averaging effect of diversity. Just three species stabilised the community as effectively as 30, but via different mechanisms.
