Simon Plakolb @plakolb.bsky.social · 21/09/2026As long as LLMs are stateless systems I'll be having a hard time ascribing any mindfulness to them. For "agents" this state is still in the environment, so no difference there. Also interesting: How easy it is to ascribe human qualities that we long refused to grant animals at all to a machine. 120

Simon Plakolb @plakolb.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Digital Twins accelerate societal self-reference to its physical limit. Understanding them through systems theory helps us navigate the fine line between democratic decision-support and cybernetic solutionism. Simon Plakolb @plakolb.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Who controls the model narrative? If models remain closed black boxes, the Digital Twin degrades from a transparent mirror into an opaque Delphi oracle that demands blind trust. To protect democratic discourse, the human-in-the-loop must retain control over model assumptions and selection. 100
Simon Plakolb @plakolb.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Because society changes the moment a model informs policy, the model constantly invalidates itself (i.e. the Lucas Critique). Digital Twins are an attempt to outrun this invalidation by feeding real-time data back into the system. The result? An infinite regress of radicalized, self-observation. 100
Simon Plakolb @plakolb.bsky.social · 14/09/2026In engineering, Digital Twins rely on direct cybernetic control loops. But social systems aren't robot arms and can't be hard-wired; they can only be irritated. A social Digital Twin isn't a steering wheel; it acts as a digital mirror that drives structural coupling within complex social dynamics. 100
Simon Plakolb @plakolb.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Are Digital Twins just the latest tech-hype buzzword, or are they fundamentally rewriting how society observes itself? In a new paper out of @uio.no & @uni-graz.at, sociologist Raffael Hiden and I theorize that Digital Twins are the epitome of systemic acceleration in the digital age. 🧵 Thread 👇 110
