I am reminded of this Seamus Heaney poem:
Lightenings viii

The annals say: when the monks of Clonmacnoise
Were all at prayers inside the oratory
A ship appeared above them in the air.

The anchor dragged along behind so deep
It hooked itself into the altar rails
And then, as the big hull rocked to a standstill,

A crewman shinned and grappled down the rope
And struggled to release it. But in vain.
'This man can't bear our life here and will drown,'

The abbot said, 'unless we help him.' So
They did, the freed ship sailed, and the man climbed back
Out of the marvellous as he had known it.

Seamus Heaney

WTF is this shit?
A zoomed in portion of the above photo of Italian partisans.

A tall man with slicked hair and a moustache, wearing a trenchcoat, with a strap crossing his chest and a handgun apparently hanging from the strap. His hand is lightly holding the gun, presumably to stop it swinging.

At first glance, however, it looks like he is holding the gun with 3 fingers by the handle with the barrel hanging down.

Tycho, with an annoyed look, replies:
"What if your wife orbits my dick"

Third panel:

"No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away, until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone's life is only the core of their actual existence." #GNUTerryPratchett
Shortly before he died, Terry Pratchett assured me that, if there is an afterlife, he would give me a ring & let me know. That was ten years ago - and still no call.
From which, incidentally, I draw no firm conclusions. What if there was an afterlife, but with no phone signal?
But of course there is one place where Terry indisputably lives on: in the pages of his books and in the minds of the millions of readers around the world who turn those pages and continue to find them funny and true.
For, while his words live on, so does Terry, and that will be the case, no question, not just for this one decade so quickly gone, but for many further decades to come.
So let me join Lyn and Rhianna in raising a glass today to the magical persistence of books and to Sir Terry; gone but still so very firmly with us.

Lol fuck off
A Tweet from Eoin O'Malley, @AnMailleach, QTing Social Rights Ireland, their tweet: a picture of the Famine memorial in Dublin with the text "It wasn't a famine. It was genocide."

Eoin:
Eh, no.
It was horrendous. It was a tragedy followed by complete policy failure. The word genocide is thrown about so easily, it will lose its power.

(Me commenting now)
Nah, it was a genocide. The shoe fits. The "policy failure" was a British government so fanatically committed to free market economic policy, and so reflexively Anti-Irish, they let people starve rather than stop or reduce food exports out of Ireland.
