You might have a tzedakah box at home, but what is tzedakah?⁠ ⁠ Some people think of tzedakah as charity, but the Hebrew word means "justice," or more specifically, doing the right thing by helping people or causes.

Happy birthday, trees! Six weeks after Hanukkah, nature is awakening. Almond trees are blooming in Israel, and the sap is rising. Tu B'Shevat, which starts tonight, is a special holiday known as the Jewish New Year for trees. It's all about celebrating the earth and its bounty.

The Harold Grinspoon Foundation is heartbroken by the devastating attack on the Jewish community in Sydney that gathered to celebrate Hanukkah at Bondi Beach. On a night meant for joy and light, innocent lives were taken in an antisemitic terrorist attack.

Ready to shake up Shabbat? One way is to try making it beautiful, a Jewish concept called hiddur mitzvah. It means "beautification of a commandment." Think swapping tealights for candlesticks, or dressing up the dining room with placecards and placemats.

This Shabbat, we're highlighting a book that has a lot to do with Shabbat, heading to older readers now. At age 11, Estee Ackerman made it to the finals of the U.S. National Table Tennis Championships. There was only one match standing between her and a gold medal—and it was set during Shabbat.

Who doesn’t love a classic fairy tale? Centuries ago, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov crafted intriguing tales to make complex spiritual truths more accessible to his followers. Israeli author Ruth Calderon and illustrator Alona Millgram brought one of these to life.
