Anna’s inheritance from her aunt was emotionally loaded. The gift carried history, obligation, and the uncomfortable fact that what we inherit isn’t always what we wanted. It felt less like a gift than a bequest, something handed down because no one else wanted to carry it anymore. #vss365

The moment demanded someone who was brave. I was not brave, far from it. However, I could pretend to be and sometimes with a bully that was good enough. #2WordPrompt

Agnes was due to work on fire watch as a punishment for the nurses absconding with a lantern belonging to St. Paul’s Cathedral. However, a temporary reprieve came in the mail telling her that her duty had been postponed until December. #vss365
In an earlier storyline the nurses had found a lantern by the Thames River They took it home and later the constabulary came looking for it. Agnes said she alone had taken it. She ultimately was given service on the fire watch as a punishmen in lieu of jail time or a fine.

Agnes moved from bed to bed, her hands steady, her breath even. The engines outside pressed against the canvas walls, but inside she kept the rhythm of cleansing: water poured, linen folded, fear rinsed away. It was a kind of purification: not of blood or sin, but of despair itself. #vss365

Outside, the war pressed its weight against the hospital walls - distant engines, the low thrum of a city holding its breath. Agnes moved to the next bed without hesitation, having long renounced the luxury of fear. #vss365

Peter came for a short visit, meaning to talk about the farm, yet they ended up speaking of the father instead, the words slow and careful as if they might bruise. Afterwards, he found he couldn’t talk about it, the day had left a weight on his chest that needed quiet to lift. #2WordPrompt

Each of the nurses had a different way of nurturing. Agnes nurtured through steadiness, Anna through warmth, and Clara through quiet precision. Each expressed care differently, yet all conveyed the fragile rhythm of survival. #vss365

Agnes reckoned with the truth about being temporally marooned that hurt the most: she was no longer a visitor in 1940. Right down to her molecular makeup she belonged to its gravity, its rhythm, its people. Going back would mean tearing herself out of the only world that felt real anymore. #vss365

Thanks to bread, potatoes and their victory garden, the nurses did not go genuinely hungry, but foods became scarce that depended on imports or complex supply chains, especially meat, butter, sugar, bacon, cheese, tea, and many fresh fruits and vegetables. U-boats were mostly to blame. #vss365

In September 1940, with the Blitz underway, the nurses couldn’t safely travel within Britain, but they still dreamed of respites in quieter corners. They mused about embarking to the Lake District with its misty hills and quiet lakes where they could rest and recharge their minds and bodies. #vss365
