It's unclear to me where your source is from, so it's hard to evaluate whether I should take seriously the claim that girls on the spectrum are "hugely over-represented" in the results. I wonder if this is a valid claim given the historical under-representation of girls with autism diagnoses.

So we're on the same page. I had to cancel my subscription to the Popehat/Barro pod because I dislike Barro so much.

I'm willing to state for the record that the 'Ohio Arena' that Trump referenced is a high school gym where I wrestled in tournaments 50 years ago.

Also Keith Laumer, whose books were either MilSF or Retief, which featured a gun-shooting blowing-shit-up diplomat (!) surrounded by hot women who wanted to fuck him and feckless colleagues who wanted to kowtow to the evil empire opposing him. James Bond in SF drag, really.

To be clear, that book's take on Mussolini was something along the lines of "Well, he wasn't THAT bad, just misguided."

Honestly, half of Heinlein's work would fit. Sixth Column, Puppet Masters, Farnham's Freehold, Stranger In a Strange Land, Have Space Suit Will Travel, Glory Road, Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, Time Enough For Love, Door Into Summer, the list goes on. Also, Poul Anderson's work.

Anything by Pournelle just reeks of right-wing angst. Have you read his re-writing of the Inferno, where Benito Mussolini gets a starring role?

the crucial word there is "good". John Ringo would probably be happy with a never-ending Trump presidency, but his fiction generally sucks.

fuck as a default, unless they're by women. See much of Zelazny or Bester for example. But Heinlein's the GOAT of right-wing SF heads, often without trying to be so. I'm excluding Lovecraft and Howard since they're fantasy. L. Sprague DeCamp is an edge-case. If you on Camestros Felapton's blog

I'm presuming by canon you're asking for books before the turn of the century, cause otherwise you could just look at books by the Pups themselves. Hoyt, Ringo, Wright, Freer, etc. But also books from before the 80s or so are just so thoroughly steeped in their times that they're often misogynist as

The only thing I regret about Queen of Swords is that they didn't publish Master of Samar by M. Scott, which I think is one of the best semi-unnoticed books of the last few years. Everything of hers that they've put out is great, but Master of Samar tops them in a self-contained queer magic novel.

As far as I'm concerned, Biden did so much damage to the country over the years, starting with the way he handled the Clarence Thomas hearings, that the few good things he did (supporting gay marriage before Obama did, the COVID response and the attempt at a economic boost post-COVID) are outweighed

No excuse for Acton, but allegedly Sherrod B. big-footed the governor's nom until he decided at the last minute to run for Senate again. Acton was the last/only candidate left standing

Until/unless Frith can identify, name and diagnose the condition my son is subject to, so that he can get the accommodations he needs, she can go fuck herself. I never want to hear the phrase "Oh, he should just get over it" again. Frith's caviling about what exactly 'autism' is doesn't help.
020 0
pixlaw.bsky.social @pixlaw.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
And Frith's idea that we should limit application of the word autism to folks who are profoundly affected leaves people like my son, or Eric, or Holden Thorp out in the cold. What do we call the condition these folks have? "Autism-Lite?" Or why don't we just call them "different"? That'll go well

I was enraged when I heard about Frith's claims. One of our kids was diagnosed as having Asperger's in the early 00's, and we struggled mightily to get him the accommodations he needed. I still remember the school principal arguing with us, saying "He can't need help, he's doing so well in school."

Heaven & Hell: The Very Best of the Mekons A typically orthogonal Greatest Hits album with major bangers (Where Were You, The Olde Trip to Jerusalem, Milllionaire and Empire of the Senseless) and some oddball deep cuts as well. Still missing great post-2005 songs, but a real treat.

For them 'progress' means taking the smallest possible, even infinitesimal, steps towards things that might improve peoples' lives. And accepting cut-backs in real gains in civil and personal rights because 'that's compromise.'

I note the irony of TAH complaining about wokeness on campuses, while here in Ohio we're facing state lawmakers dictating speech by professors and schools: ohiocapitaljournal.com/2026/08/07/o... He'd probably blame it on the left for going too far.

Here in Ohio, a mid-tier state U History dept. requires a book to get tenure. In other fields, probably multiple articles will do but in history, it's "book or be gone". And I don't know about Bates, but at most schools the tenure clock only runs for 8 or 9 years at most before panic-time.

Here in our mostly red state a recent law was passed requiring the state universities to close all their 'divisive' student centers. Which meant, of course, that the school funded Womens Centers at the state schools were all closed last summer. Along, of course, with the Pan-African Centers, etc.

We're seeing this in Ohio, where Sherrod Brown is running away from any confrontational talking points. ICE? no. Impeaching Trump? no. Reforming the courts? no. Support for LGBTQIA folks? no. Pocketbook all the way down. It's truly disappointing.

If you liked Witch King, you should definitely check out Melissa Scott's Master of Samar. Fabulous fantasy set in an alt-Venice, with gender queer characters left and right. Also, her Points series, set in a Renaissance level matriarchal city. Really really good. Hell, anything by her is good.

I'm not sure it can top the "Rush Revere" series allegedly written by Rush Limbaugh, featuring time traveling history teacher Rush Revere, his 'hilarious' sidekick Liberty the talking horse, and middle school kids, who meet famous figures, and "see history happen right in front of them."
