I suspect Zach is talking about a venue other than online forums. Case in point I don't think AI being alive matters for many issues and there's no obvious reason it should. Not that I want to argue here but there's clearly a good discussion to be had in a PROPER format.

Kinda creeped out by how many people assume that this only makes sense for organ harvesting. Do we not all agree that this would just be another completely independent human that you have no more claim over than your child (whether adopted or non adopted)?

I sincerely hope you're encouraged by how this struck a nerve with many people! You don't get this many "the implication is stupid and I refuse to engage!" responses unless it's actually challenging them.

Segmenting citrus without the membrane. Yes I briefly mentally misread "taco suprême" and chuckle every time.

I think that's exactly the way to look at it. Any time someone says "well LLMs do X and brains do Y" there's a valid rebuttal of one of "can you show that LLMs don't actually do Y?" or "can you actually show that the brain isn't doing X?" Or ofc "do we even have a coherent definition of Y?"

For anyone saying that LLMs can't do arithmetic or whatever: can you come up with a test demonstrating that human minds CAN? The claim is technically correct but only for the same reason that we don't have adder circuits in our brain either. Both use a combination of rote memory and process.

I like the new System framing, but calling it "artificial cognition" seems the wrong name... isn't it more like "external cognition?" Like when we trust a bus driver to follow a route, a spouse to remember things, or a doctor to judge medical advice. AI illiteracy is then dangerous overuse of S3.

This, this, this. When in doubt, look at the individual incentives. It's less a big conspiracy of idiots than a bunch of local greedy decisions.

I love this, and totally think nihilism can set you free, but am at a loss with smart folks who still seem to believe there's a Platonic ideal way to build society. And not that we're all just winging it.

I think that's true... but not necessarily in a bad way? As in, AI cognition isn't getting much "smarter" but people are steadily getting better at using it as a tool and not a gimmick -- in some specific domains anyway.

Sort of "randomness deficiency" as statistical fallacy? onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... (I'm just now noticing the AMAZING choice of doc tracking number for this paper). And I think your answer is to maximize Kolmogorov Complexity but for "human token count" instead of Turing instructions?

Seeing Patterns in Randomness: A Computational Model of Surprise
Much research has linked surprise to violation of expectations, but it has been less clear how one can be surprised when one has no particular expectation. This paper discusses a computational theory...

Curious how much is due to the quality of interactions and how much is the format itself, like are bsky, patreon, discord all the same? Tbh I don't know if social media even SHOULD be thought of as a replacement for those connections, or just a way to engage a different set of social neurons.

Yeah, seems like "or maybe our (loose) definition of thinking/reasoning means a binary answer is impossible here" would apply. The question itself, though, does a good job demonstrating how strongly people feel about what they hope the answer to be.

Seems like a pretty good time to capitalize on that! Since the thinking-about-thinking fields are having such a moment right now, with formerly academic philosophy problems turning into real-world engineering problems.

Another way to look at this: it's really impressive that as humans we've built proof systems, and language constructs to describe math and logic, up to the point where a LLM (which brings perseverance and long context window) can comprehend the problem and reason about a solution.

Is it any less valid, as we see AI becoming more and more equally capable of stuff that looks like cognition, to come away with the impression that maybe ALL minds are Chinese Room style predictor engines? Always seemed surprisingly lax of philosophers to assume otherwise.
