I was absolutely giddy all day. Of course I got picked on by the tour guide (who told me I played along so well I’d “make a great actor one day”, I wonder if he’s a fan of the channel 😂), another one asked me if there was a reason I seemed “so excited”. Fucking yeah man. I’m in the Tower of London

If I had to guess how it started, I will admit that the embarrassing reason is probably this Goosebumps I read when I was like 9 years old. Definitely one of my top 5 Goosebumps books (some others would be Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb and Beast From the East, not that anybody asked).

I’ve had a weird fascination with medieval crime & punishment ever since I was a kid. When people used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up I remember my (very cool and normal) answer being I wanted to be a jailer. The Tower of London always held a special interest for me.

...I find incredible resonances that make for an absolutely magical moment. In my Outer Wilds video, for example, I stumbled upon this quote while scrubbing through footage - "The universe is, and we are" - which provided a perfect echo to a clip I'd played earlier from Alone: "Nature just is."

Here's one I got just last week! This is a pretty typical one actually. The cruelty from commenters is incredible and constant. People who have never created anything in their life going, "Hey, I noticed ONLY 30 thousand people have seen the thing you made. That's not much. You kinda suck huh"

The channel fully hit a wall last year. All the numbers were down (views, new subs, patrons) compared to 2024, none more so than # of new subscribers, which hasn't been this low since I started the channel 5 years ago. As usual I only have guesses as to why.

I'm also not convinced that the game 'encourages thorough exploration of one planet at a time'. Does it? How? There's no soul retrieval mechanic. When you die mid-exploration, there's actually no clear reason to return to that one spot next run rather than go somewhere else.

Like this is just demonstrably wrong. Even just browsing a walkthrough that followed a pretty optimal route, I found at least three planets that have a bit where you have to find a clue on a different planet first. No the planets aren't self-contained. Yes there is backtracking.

This is what we're opposing when we reject AI art - the desire for a bizarrely "perfect" digital world, the hypnotic comfort of familiar images with no human soul behind them. Like the Surrealists, we have to hold on to the human in ourselves and in art. The wonky, the jagged, the imperfect.
