Disgaea 4 on PS3, Vita, and Switch! Recently picked up the game on Switch and realized that the sprites in the complete+ version of the game are smoothed over a bit without any option to change it. It's most likely a form of anti-aliasing that is mistakenly applied to the sprites as well. #disgaea

It really sucks that the messy shift to HD compromised the art in games during the 7th generation. thankfully nowadays we can see the internal 720p image through scalers and emulation. This issue really sticks out for the few games that went with HD sprites like Disgaea/Hard Corps Uprising/KOFXIII

Disgaea D2 was created entirely around 720p but sadly most people have never seen the game looking as intended by the developers. 99% of TVs made at the time were actually 768p or 1080p meaning the art would have a blurry bilinear scale applied in order to fit on screen. unscaled vs bilinear below

I kind of have no interest in buying games on console if its not a physical copy and even then most Playstation exclusives for awhile haven't interested me and the release cadence is pretty slow so if not for the ability to play 4k blu rays I probably would've been regretting my purchase

Was so happy to find out that Disgaea on ps2 runs at 240p! Looks gorgeous upscaled with the retrotink. I imagine they did this so that their ps1 assets they re-used would present really nicely

Yeah textures and assets are better in those other games and the tiling is pretty evident in a good chunk of areas but I've never been a fan of the materials in those games, they kind of have that trademark 7th gen "wet" look to them that I dont see in DS2 and all their other post DS3 games

My guess is that attention to lighting in the level design stems from when that was a large focus on the gameplay as shown in pre-release footage. It's one of the reasons I'm excited for this mod since its sort of like a peak into that earlier version of the game that never released

I've always felt DS2, especially when it was new, never got enough credit for it's art direction. The great views and attention to lighting detail really set this game apart from others in the series. In a lot of ways I think DS2 looks better than DS3 which feels closer to how DS1 did lighting

In terms of specifics probably the senran kagura ryoubi and ryouna, and the danganronpa miu charms. Can't remember exactly what most of the higurashi/umineko charms look like but I'd be interested in buying some of those too
