My #ADHD psych has started a newsletter and I thought some of you might find this interesting also. (Neurominority, though? 🤮)
ADHD in Women: Why Wasn’t It Spotted Sooner?
ADHD is often diagnosed later in women than in men. This does not mean that ADHD developed later; ADHD is a
neurodevelopmental condition, so symptoms begin in childhood. However, ADHD in girls can be less visible, particularly
when they learn to compensate, mask their difficulties or meet expectations placed on them by family, school and society.
As a result, some women may spend years wondering why everyday tasks seem to require so much more effort than they
appear to require for others.
Why can ADHD be missed in girls and women?
“She’s doing well at school, so how could it be ADHD? She’s probably just anxious!”
Good grades do not rule out ADHD. Some girls may put enormous effort into keeping up, become perfectionistic, work for
much longer hours than others, or rely heavily on routines and reminders to stay organised. From the outside, they may
appear to be coping well, while maintaining this level of performance can be exhausting. When this effort is accompanied
by worry, overwhelm or difficulty coping, these difficulties may be attributed to anxiety rather than ADHD. However, ADHD
and anxiety can also occur together, it does not always have to be ADHD or anxiety; it can be ADHD and anxiety.
Inattention can be quieter than hyperactivity
ADHD does not always look like obvious disruptive behaviour or physical hyperactivity. In some girls, hyperactivity may be
experienced more internally, as a busy or restless mind, daydreaming or difficulty switching off, while appearing relatively
quiet on the outside.
Masking and compensating
Strict parenting, high-achieving personalities and cultural expectations for girls to be well behaved, organised and
responsible may also encourage them to hide or compensate for their difficulties or busy minds. Hence, many women
develop strategies to manage their difficulties and appear organised on the outside, while using a huge amount of effort
internally. Why might ADHD become more noticeable later in life?
Children often have a lot of external support around them, parents reminding them about homework, teachers providing
prompts, school timetables, family routines and other people helping them stay organised.
As they grow older, much of this support gradually disappears. University, work, relationships, finances and household
responsibilities require much more independent planning and organisation.
Constantly compensating for ADHD can also require a huge amount of mental effort. Spending excessive time on basic
tasks, repeatedly forgetting things, working late to catch up or relying on last-minute bursts of effort can eventually lead to
burnout.
This can create a cycle:
Difficulty → extra effort → exhaustion → perceived failure → anxiety / low self-esteem → guilt → trying even harder →
burnout
Could hormones play a part too?
Hormonal changes may also influence how ADHD symptoms are experienced. Some research suggests that changes
around menstruation, puberty, pregnancy, postpartum and perimenopause/menopause may affect and exaggerate ADHD
symptoms such as attention, mood, energy and executive functioning. However, research in this area is still developing,
and not everyone will experience the same changes. For some women, these hormonal transitions may be times when
previously manageable ADHD difficulties become more noticeable.
Conclusion
A late diagnosis does not mean your ADHD started late. Sometimes the difficulties were simply less visible, masked,
compensated for or supported by others until the demands of life increased, leading to significant impairment.
Sometimes the diagnosis isn’t late; the recognition is!
We will soon be launching an “ADHD in women” webinar on our website if you would like to know
more about this!

What Do People Think About the Term
"Neurodivergent"?
A study of 740 adults with atism, ADD, dyslexia, or both autism and ADHD explored attitudes towards common neurodiversity-related terms.
Participants from the UK and USA rated
"neurodivergent" and "neurodiverse" as the most preferred, acceptable, and least offensive terms.
In contrast, "neurominority" and "neurospicy" were the least popular.
Preferences were generally similar across different groups, although people with both autism and ADHD showed the strongest support for "neurodivergent", while participants with dyslexia viewed these terms slightly less positively.

I read this recently on Reddit and have been thinking about it a lot. I get sugar cravings deep into the night though I’m usually already awake, I always thought it was my adhd meds wearing off. Anyone tried the applesauce thing?
I picked up a tip from this sub (or maybe women over 40) that has changed everything.
Applesauce.
I don't recall exactly the mechanisms, but as we age get bad at regulating our blood sugar. Your blood sugar tends to tank around 3am, and your body thinks it's an emergency so releases cortisol to wake you up. That's why you're UP and super alert.
Now when I feel it's one of Those 3am wake ups I slurp down a packet of apple sauce, get up to rinse out my mouth and use the bathroom, and I will reliably fall back asleep in 30 minutes instead of 90 (or never.)
Life changing. Having apple sauce on my nightstand is a little weird but I couldn't care less.
110
Jes Steele ✌️ @piratito.com · 03/09/2026
No, it isn't. Having the privilege of aging, while holding the highest position of power in the country and using it to earn billions for you and your family, while surrounded by the world's media - a thing you enjoy more than anything in the world. That is not karma for mocking a disabled person.
