Pip, the golden retriever is sitting in the centre of the photograph facing towards you. It’s a bright sunny day and his fur is shining; it’s dark gold on his back shoulders and the sides of his head, but lighter on his legs, chest and face. He is sitting on the platform of a railway station, with a golden–yellow coloured wooden picket fence at the end of the platform behind him. On the opposite side of the rail line in the distance is a hill with a beautiful semi-ruined Medieval castle at the top. The walls appear light grey in the sunlight and are likely to have been built using Purbeck stone. This is Corfe Castle, which was built after the 1066 Norman conquest of England and deliberately destroyed after the English Civil War. The rail line is the Heritage Swanage Railway, which runs a steam hauled service between nearby Norden and the Seaside town of Swanage. Pip has a smile on his face with his tongue hanging out and a friendly expression on his face.

Pip the Golden Retriever is facing towards you looking between two upright wooden posts in a fence. Each slips outwards from a narrow gap at the bottom with a wooden step. Pip, who is in bright sunlight, is looking at you with big brown eyes and has a smile on his face with his tongue hanging out. The fur on his face was greying with age when the photo was taken almost two years ago, giving him a dignified - but handsome - slightly elderly look. This type of ‘squeeze’ stile is a simple and effective, and lasts for many years against the elements. The narrow gap is thinner at the base and broadens towards the top, so most people can navigate these easily but they remain impassible to cows, sheep and other types of livestock.

This picture was taken at the Spa Valley Railway’s terminal at Tunbridge Wells West station.

The locomotive is a 4-6-2 Battle of Britain class Pacific designed by the Southern Railway’s chief engineer Oliver Bullied. It has had the original streamlined casing that was typical or these locomotives removed.

When the photo was taken, the loco was named Sir Keith Park after the World War Two RAF 11 Group leader during the Battle of Britain. It was temporary named 303 Squadron last year to commemorate the role that Polish pilots of this squadron played in the battle.

Pip the Golden Retriever is sitting facing towards you on a raised area above a pretty pedestrian walkway. The is looking to your right towards an elegant Georgian colonnade of shops and cafes with people sitting outside enjoying their alfresco breakfasts. Above the colonnade there are pretty wooden clad buildings, while to his left are mature trees and a few market stalls. He is on The Pantiles in Royal Tunbridge Wells, which was always a highlight of his daily walks. He used to stop at each cafe or shop where he knew the manager or a member of staff, and he loved meeting passers by with their dogs. We still walk on The Pantiles, an elegant Georgian colonnade of independent shops, cafes and restaurants in Royal Tunbridge Wells several times a week, but it’s not the same without Pip the Golden Retriever, who left us last September. We will continue publishing pictures in his memory each Thursday for the foreseeable future.

Yesterday was #NationalWinnieThePoohDay! What a good excuse to post a pic of Pip at Gills Lap, called ‘Galleons Lap’ in the Pooh stories. 🧸 Gills Lap is by ‘The Enchanted Place’ and is a clump of Scots Pines. Nobody, not even Christopher Robin, could count them, but there are either 63 or 64. 🐾

I walk the line! 🎶 Our Pip was so happy whenever he walked The Forest Way, the disused Groombridge to Eridge railway line. 🌤️ It’s now a 10-mile long linear county park and a wonderful place to walk a dog. 🐶 #ThrowbackThursday (pic: Feb 2024) ⏳

This photograph was taken one year ago this week when the third round of the English Football Association cup was played. The third round is the first to involve top-flight teams. The 44 teams from English football's top two tiers were in the third-round draw, along with 20 remaining entrants from previous rounds from League One, League Two and the National League.

We took this photo, which we never posted in the end, as a public service reminder that chocolate contains a chemical called 'theobromine', which is toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more poisonous it is. Pip once stole part of a chocolate cake when he was young, giving us some anxious hours. Fortunately, a vet calculated the percentage of chocolate in what he ate and he was OK. We believe it was the last time that he ever stole food.
