Text: The idea of simply walking past her new knight had occurred to her. He didn't know what she looked like; it would've been simple to saunter on by, maybe even toss him a cheeky hello, before disappearing into the pocket. Of course, it would only have worked that one time, because she was confident he'd have gone straight to Damryn to tattle if she no showed.
She felt a little nip of annoyance at this imagined betrayal and wrinkled her nose. Did he look the tattling type? The shadow of a beard and scar above his brow said no, but the deferential tilt of his head said maybe.

Even the bouts of panic he’d witnessed had allowed for flight, wild and blind as it had been. This came from a deeper place beyond all reason, beyond hope, where Nyl had been unraveled, one thread at a time, until the only thing left was suffering.

When I say difficult, I don't mean it's a slog to get through or the writing is bad (quite the opposite on both fronts), I mean the subject matter. Only a small fraction of the horror of the Gardens is supernatural. So much of it is seeped in real world horror: racism, classism, gentrification, gun violence, systematic oppression. Thompson delivers it unflinchingly and compassionately. I highly recommend this tense, claustrophobic novel, but make sure you're in the right headspace for it. Heavy, hard, and haunting.$

I'm about 60% of the way through THE CURSE OF HESTER GARDENS by Tamika Thompson and it's really good. Hester Gardens is a tense, claustrophobic setting full of complicated characters fighting not to be lost to curses laid long before they were born.

THEY WILL KILL YOU is a really good time! It was reminiscent of Ready or Not, but was enough it's own thing I never really found myself comparing the two. Bloody, silly, with just enough heart to keep it satisfying. Recommended if you're looking for a fun watch.
