Depending on how long you've been gone, your impression of what it's like today could be pretty off base. But I'm not trying to change anyone's mind! Bluesky is a good place with a good mission.

It's clear that people—especially those who use 'For You' instead of 'Following'!—have extraordinarily different experiences on X. It pains me to say it, cuz I hoped Elon would fail and X would be supplanted by Bluesky, but it's probably the best it's ever been. bsky.app/profile/pipo...

And that’s fair. It’s good to have thresholds and to hold to them. To be clear, Elon is horrendous, and there are few things that have made me angrier than what DOGE did to science and public health here. Still, I choose to focus on things that make a more tangible difference than not using his app.

No. Quick, without looking it up: if you own a car, who’s the CEO of the company that made that car? To which political party/ies did they donate in the last few election cycles? What about the firms managing your investment accounts? The holder of your mortgage? Your TV?

You think the AI might be unaligned and end all humanity? And you gave it its own powerful cloud computing environment and full access to the open Internet?

Because Bluesky is great and I support its mission, and there are a lot of excellent people here who don't post on X. But I don't make which social network I use a part of my identity or moral standing. bsky.app/profile/pipo...

Well good on you, I guess. 99.9% of people don't, and IMO there's nothing wrong with that. It's barely noon and I've used dozens of products today with components sourced from collectively hundreds (thousands?) of companies, and I know nothing about those companies' CEOs.

Do you tend to keep track of the owners of the companies of all products you use in your life, and modify your purchasing habits according to your judgments of them?

(Incidentally, I’ve uniformly had the mirror experience on Bluesky: “Where is this ‘shrieking hyperliberal bubble where everyone hates AI?’” Only time I’m ever exposed to it is when it bleeds into my follows’ posts. [Apropos of no recent protracted LLMs/arithmetic discourse, naturally!])

All that said: Bluesky has the highest-quality discourse overall IME and I’m very happy it exists. I wish there were a solution to the collective action/network effects problem, but there isn’t.

So is that ultimately what it all comes down to? I’ve so shaped what X exposes to me for two decades that “my X” is full of the smartest, most insightful, and most empathetic people I’m blessed to be able to read, and it’s unthinkable to give that up. This is true for tons of people on X, no doubt.

Just now, unfiltered: zoning; economy; big tech joke; physics; dating discourse; tech; AI/mathematics research; millennial nostalgia; the new Iñárritu movie; AI; animal rights; inflation; WWII history; AI/qualia; Onion story; karaoke; science; etc. You get the idea.

But when I do occasionally scroll the For You feed, it’s probably the highest-quality content of any fully algorithmic feed out there. Not great, mind you: still full of not-especially-edifying attention bait, but better than what I see on e.g. Insta/Facebook/Reddit when I rarely visit them.

It is astonishing how different individual experiences on X can be. I can hardly conceive of the kind of content you’re referring to—I literally have never and do never see it. Granted, I’ve been on X for 20 yrs so they know my preferences very well, and I spend near-zero time on “For You.”

I'm increasingly under the impression that this "software-brain" pathology undergirds a substantial portion of AI doomerism, too.

(Though Silo is much more accessible than Dark.)

I’m enjoying the show and—depending on how deep your backlog is, it’s probably worth watching—but “best science fiction television of all time” is wild. That obviously belongs to Netflix’s “Dark.”

Ok I guess I’ll post on Bluesky occasionally as well.
