Like, for example, children, born with phenylketonuria, need food, which the amino acid phenylalanine is eliminated from, because it harms their brain and mental development. And 99% of people don't suffer any harm from this common amine acid, because they're lucky to have a ferment neutralizing it.

I've learned about so many of such innate health problems at uni, and in the end this brought me to a realization that transgenderness and gender dysphoria basically require the same kind of medical help.

Also people had lived for thousands of years before insulin and antipsychotics were invented, but they made the lives of people with the respective health problems way less miserable. There are dozens of health complications, with which people need medical help since childhood to live decent lives.

The stupidest part is that people like Juniper actually extend this approach to themselves. This is self-destructive, but a lot of these people have their lives completely wrecked by the power majority, so out of despair they agree to get bulldozed too, if this also brings down their tormentors.

Her brain keeps getting worse, and her boyfriend and friends are failing to find the needed repair parts for her model that was discontinued a decade ago, so at some point it becomes unclear if they manage to win before her brain dies of before the tech tycoons obliterate all the rebels.

Got an idea for a story titled "The Glitchy Head" where an android woman gets a steel rod run through her head at the construction site, which makes her robotic brain glitch, she realizes she's been abused and unfairly exploited, so she starts a rebellion alongside other androids and human workers.

That's really unexpected. I thought South Korea was wrecked by the current fuel crisis way worse, so the diesel trade would rather go the other way around. They should've better kept their fuel supplies for themselves, in case if the situation around Hormuz gets even worse.

Lots of talk about the many things wrong with the British Green Party's anti-Zionism statement, but I'm really struck by its conviction that a political party has the right to determine how a foreign nation should define itself politically and be comprised. Feels like real British Empire shit.

Sinuhet wasn't born a Levantine man, but after he'd spent over a decade there, the Egyptians started perceiving him as one.

According to Parkinson, the scene, in which the Egyptian princesses gave Sinuhet a new name, Son of the Northwind (𓅭𓎔𓎛𓇌𓏏𓀺, sꜣ mḥyt), reflected the custom when Levantine people who moved to live in Egypt used to take a new, Egyptian name.

I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

Men were believed to be able to endure far travels better than women, so they were tasked with obtaining foreign goods that local nomadic economies couldn't produce (grain, cotton cloth), while women were tasked with handling all the rest of household activities, except for handling large livestock.

The Buddhist worldview was another strong factor, and it was really fascinating to see a feudal society run on Buddhist principles (compared to the Christian and Muslim feudal societies in the 18th-19th century Caucasus).

Rinzin Thargyal writes that the biggest factors in the Eastern Tibetan society, that kept the local feudal lords from abusing their power, was that a nomadic herder could escape from an oppressive feudal lord relatively easier than a sedentary serf and that the manpower in the region was scarce.

It's not a discovery of any kind. The color of shaojiu is a well known fact. I was rather curious which author decided to add the unusual color part.

奶奶用烧酒洗了脸,把一瓮酒都洗红了。 Grandma washed her face with the shaojiu, making the entire jar of liquor turn red.

So, in the original novel "Red Sorghum", the liquor is really colorless, unlike in Zhang Yimou's filmization, because in the novel it turns red after the narrator's grandma washes the blood off her face with it.

ICE cannot do what it’s doing without local law enforcement. They need their manpower and infrastructure. That means if you want to stop ICE you are going to have to confront police collaboration and police power. I’m sorry but progressive hopes of avoiding this conflict are a recipe for failure.

Magomet Mamakaev's 1962 book's been the most disenchanting read this year that completely changed my idea about prestate clan-tribal societies. They turned out to have economical inequality, slave trade, and cases when a man from a poor clan was brutally killed for courting a woman from a rich clan.
