Last week, we visited the "Traveling through Bakumatsu-era Yokohama via Illustrated Maps" exhibition at the Museum of Yokohama Urban History. It traces the city's transformation from a small village into an international metropolis through maps. It runs until today! 🗾 #Yokohama #mapmaking #Japan

Yokohama #mapmaking #Japan

I was really looking forward to this one! "Reimagining Tokyo through Black Markets" by Professor Ishigure. While the text is in Japanese, the photographs and maps are superb. They transport the reader into the daily life of post-war Tokyo. Very recommended! 📖 #weeklyreading #tokyo #urbanhistory

Some photos from the book presentation, "We're Still Here," by Professor Fernando Ortiz-Moya, from last July. It is always a pleasure to learn from him about how some cities can turn population decline into opportunities to build more resilient and livable communities. #shrinkingcities #Japan

Last April, we visited the "I Love Elephants" exhibition at Takashimaya Archives in Nihonbashi (Tokyo). The exhibition traces the life of an elephant named "Taka-chan" and offers a fascinating look at Tokyo as it was decades ago. The exhibition runs until August 31st! 🐘 #Japan #Tokyo #Elephants

Japan #Tokyo #Elephants

The book illustrates this idea with examples of "(re)city-making": spontaneous bottom-up actions led by traditionally marginalized residents. It sees shrinking cities as opportunities for innovative, people-centered urban policy and collective empowerment. #Shrinkingcities

Urban shrinkage is an increasing phenomenon worldwide. Many cities view this trend as a problem that must be solved by attracting new residents. However, this book advocates strengthening the unique character and history of declining cities to enhance life for those who remain. #Placemaking

"We're Still Here: Regenerating Shrinking Cities from the Ground Up," by my dear friend, Prof. Fernando Ortiz-Moya. A really recommended read for this summer, not only for those working in urban decline but also for anyone who loves cities and seeks to design more humane environments. #Weeklyreading
