Somehow I got organised this weekend. Among other projects, lunches for the week on the go - from scratch lentil curry and a green curry with naan and rice respectively. Why look forward to 5pm weekdays when you can look forward to 12pms!
Pans on the stove top with two curries going.

Slow but steady progress with my stone terraces that shall one day be a garden. 2.5 of four walls done. I underestimated the volume of rain on weekends this winter. I’m happy to work in the cold, but cold and torrential rain not so much. So it will first be summer garden, not a Spring garden! 🌱🇳🇿
Piles of river rocks and builders’ mix on a sloping sliver of land bordered by a wooden boundary fence with two stone walls in draft (need pointing).

This time of year has the coldest nights but I enjoy the signs of Spring and Summer on their way. These grape canes are about to flower. This specimen was given to me for my new abode by someone growing a vine who got it from someone else who got it from me about ten years ago.🌱🇳🇿

Just got in a dog walk along the Skyline before the rain. In this place the wind gusts 87km/h and still you’re surrounded by clouds. The pylon cables sing, and under the pines, hundreds of groaning voices join in. Dog gives me a look. Yes, it feels like something wants our souls. Out and home. Phew!

Someone’s had their fun with real estate people’s names, Lambton Quay. But they got stumped on one.
Poster with altered sales agent names and companies on it. McIlroy had them stumped.

In my last neighbourhood, I used to be able to walk along the road and find garden herbs to use with dinner. Now, my cluster of 70s era houses is adjacent to these things. Never seen so many concrete, gravel and artificial grass berms. And no herbs. 😥 New garden can’t grow fast enough!

There should be a sliding scale for pricing chicken based on salmonella count. I don’t think this one’s cheap enough.

Where there is light, there is hope. To be fair, there are places (generally outside Te Whanganui a Tara) with more light.

Is this a real Guthrie Bowron shop or is it Guthrie Bowron-inspired? In a world where nothing seems to be quite what it seems, who knows?

Five delicious lunch vegetarian curries with garlic naans for a cost of about $8.40, being portioned for the freezer. Future me will think I’m amazing.

Visited Johnsonville Mall to get some dinner ingredients from the One Stop Asian Supermarket. I didn’t realise that shop is outside on the main street. It was nice to be in a place with no queues, but also some of the shops were open but didn’t seem to have shop keepers. Flashbacks to early 90s.
A very quiet food court.

I’m leaving my accommodation in the Hutt Valley today and strangely will miss this pair of muggers I have to pass each morning on the way to the train. The reserve and stream isn’t enough for them. I’ve been eyed up, spat and squawked at and almost driven on to the road while trying to get past.

Mason’s Lane (stairs) between Lambton Quay and The Terrace and home to Mason’s Screen. Each month the city council hosts the work of a different video artist. This is Shannon Novak’s Generative Dopamine Loop Environment.
A screen of different colours and shapes that fluctuates in response to frequently opened phone apps, creating a map of dopamine activation in the user’s brain. This bright splurge must be what Bluesky is doing to me.

Right in the city and the oldest house in Pōneke. The Sexton’s cottage in Bolton cemetery is rented privately. It would make an awesome flat, even taking into account having to live with the dead.
Just of Bolton Street. Behind a white picket fence and shrubs - red tin roof and yellow weatherboards. Many grave markers in the back yard.

The no-trains curse has hit the Upper Hutt line this week - impacting those back to work. It’s an hour on a hot, cramped bus, stopping at every train stop along the way. Silver lining, I was transferred to an air conditioned express to Wgtn this morning. But underscores, life without trains sucks.

For the next three months you can forage a free feed while walking around the Lyttelton Harbour between Governor’s Bay and Rāpaki. Plum trees, blackberries, pears, a feijoa and various Italian herbs grow along the coastal track. By chance or design, who knows?

Dragged my very loyal but hates-the-wet four-legged pal up the hill this morning. He had such a sorrowful look on his face that on the way down, I carried him above the sodden grass heads enclosing much of the track. He’s a bit like my partner that way.

A thunderstorm rolling in to Governor’s Bay has reminded me of summer showers on Waiheke Island in the 70s. That is - showers with soap. Water was scarce, so when it rained in summer, our parents handed out soap and sent us kids out to shower under the leak in the guttering.
