This is all complicated by a political landscape that seems resistant to change, and to efforts to create change. But that all underscores the need for more of us to be students of change, to observe what creates movement, to look for opportunities to shift the balance of power, and push on those.

It's Mariame Kaba's "knowing who to be mad at is praxis" and more. Knowing who to be mad at IS praxis. Then you gotta know what moves the person you're mad at to do things differently. You gotta know who THEY listen to, and how to get to them. Anger alone isn't a vision, strategy, tactic or goal.

Paranoia RPG may have been too on-the-nose, so Shadowrun seems like an apt choice for a game where you fight against AI and the corporations that created them.

It would even make sense for magical items to be prestigious goods to own for a innkeeper Big Man (and be buried with eventually) as it holds the promise for the community that should a big monster threaten them, he will be able to hire powerful adventurers.
000
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Communities in which the innkeeper cannot extract enough wealth, whether from renting lands or alcohol consumption, will be overrun by monsters as the big man cannot afford to regularly stop and gire travellers from the adventuring-class.
100
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
The innkeeper would still own the place where local banquets (the archtypical demonstration of wealth in small xommunity) are held. The fact that every traveller is expected to go to the inn and pay the innkeeper rather than be hosted by the local farmers practically functions as a toll.

Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
I would have thought a village's innkeeper would be the local Big Man (even though titular leadership ritually goes to "the elder(s)). Monsters and evil magicians and reliance on roaming adventurers would limit the capability for big landowners to morph into a credible warrior-class.

... and the argument should only address how and why an ethnic-based bourgeois Reaction do not draw on any "primitive warfare habitus" (to summarise as much as possible the OP) 9/9
000
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
If the opinion is that the OP tool may be working on some "ethnic-based Reaction in industrial society" but specifically not on bourgeois Reaction, then whether bourgeois Reaction is all of facism ("original definition") or simply a subset of it ("extended definition") is of no interest... 8/9
100
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
You may oppose the OP proposed analytical tool on the ground that it is 1) ineffectual for facism, and thus to be discarded, or 2) broader in scope than much of the existing analytical tools for facism and thus requires a broader term 7/9
110
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
That being said, one could upheld that the majority of analytical tools we have for facism do break when used on "ethnic-based non-bourgeois Reaction to other-than-socialism" but the very point of the OP was an essay at an analytical tool 6/9

Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
One may prefer to stick to the original definitions for both Reaction and Facism, but allowing one definition to be extended and not the other strikes me as an odd position... 5/9
110
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
We did extend the definition of Reaction, to include Facism among others, because the contemporary and historical analytical tools for Reaction were understood to work on a broader set of similar political ideologies than just "aristocratic Reaction to liberalism in preindustrial society" 4/9
110
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
I do get that the point is to distinguish "ethnic-based bourgeois Reaction to socialism in industrial society" from ideologies such as "ethnic-based bourgeois Reaction to *ecology* in industrial society" and "ethnic-based *popular* Reaction to socialism in industrial society" 3/9
100
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
If historians of the past have been previously allowed to alter the original definition of Reaction to encompass different but similar political beliefs such as Facism, why wouldn't historians be now allowed to alter the definition of Facism to encompass different but similar political beliefs ? 2/9
100
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Not what I meant either. If Facism is described as a subset of Reaction (reactionary) while it doesn't satisfy the original definition of Reaction, why can't one describe ethnic-reaction-in-industrial-society as a subset of Facism even if it doesn't satisfy the original definition of Facism ? 1/9

Ultras were advocating for a made-up "past" (return to catholic monarchy but with census suffrage), which at the time extended the definition of reaction. But its rejection of bourgeois political interests was a defining feature, so facism cannot be included without also redefining ultra-reaction.
110
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Reaction in post-revolutionary France advocated return to a previous state of society that people had experienced in their lifetime. To label as movements that advocated return to a past that never existed as reactionary was a very substantial (but accepted) change to its defining features.
120
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Something I don't get is why facism cannot get a definition outside of the specific context that appeared in late 19th/early 20th Europe, if the "proper" definition itself relies on giving reaction and ultra definitions way outside the context of post-revolutionary France and Bourbon restoration.

Can't say much about facism and consumerism. About capitalism, the key difference is that fascism is only willing to accept profits to go to the private owners of capital goods as an intermediary step before the profits go to the state 4/4
020
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
And to some extent, Facism does promise people the joy of consumerism and claim profits are owed to the civilization that, in their view, rightfully owns the capital goods and innovations 3/4
120
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
That being said, a lot of people also entirely conflate liberalism, capitalism and consumerism and consider one necessarily leads to the two others, which make them think use the liberal label very... well, liberally 2/4

Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
To the best of my understanding, the emotional reason is that fascists were anti-communist, communists are anti-liberal, therefore fascists are anti-anti-liberal therefore pro-liberal. (It is left as an exercise to the reader where that line of reasoning might be broken)

Then it may also depend on whether the characters or plots are complex enough (giving things to remove or change) or too generic, or obvious copycats of something else Like, say "This is my take on Eragon" wouldn't give the same vibe as "This is my take on Marvel's Civil War."
020
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I'd expect judgements to vary between "This is my take on famous character X" (like Sherlock Holmes), "This is my take on famous plot Y" and "TIMT on the exact same set of characters and plot" (and also "TIMT on famous interwoven character and plot Z," for example Romeo & Juliet).

Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 24/07/2026

Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
010
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
120
Pinailleur @pinailleur.bsky.social · 24/07/2026

Like the fixer being out of the team is originally a Shadowrun thing (it's a char class in Cyberpunk), as is the indebted, financially-broken character (most character classes in Cyberpunk 2013 were pictured as 80ies-style yuppies, while Shadowrun had squatter lifestyle as a chargen option).
