Today is the feast of St Osyth. Legend says this Anglo-Saxon abbess was beheaded on the Essex coast and carried her head to the church door. A flint gatehouse still marks the abbey built in her honour, and the village bears her name. Have you been? #bringyourownbeliefs

Translate comes from the Latin for carried across. Today, St Jerome’s Day, we remember a pilgrim who settled in Bethlehem to carry the Bible into Latin. Pilgrimage crosses a barrier too, and neither crossing is ever complete. So we walk the same paths again. Where do you return to?

Today is Michaelmas. Across England, 816 churches are dedicated to St Michael, many on hilltops, tors and headlands, as guardians over the land. His spear can be read as a ray of light, the dragon as wild nature, or our own shadow. Is there a St Michael’s church on a hill near you?

Today we celebrate Our Lady of Walsingham. In 1061, Mary showed Richeldis her house in Nazareth in a vision and asked her to build a copy in Norfolk. Pilgrims came for almost 500 years. On Sunday 11 October, Guy Hayward leads a day pilgrimage there from Wells-next-the-Sea. tinyurl.com/4kktbcz4

Today is the feast of St Edith of Wilton. King Edgar's daughter, offered the throne of England, she turned it down to stay a nun. She wore gold over a hair shirt, and told a bishop God looks at the heart, not the clothes. She died at about twenty-three. Have you walked the St Edith of Wilton Way?

A low mound on the Ridgeway, named for Wayland the smith-god: leave a horse and a silver coin overnight, the tale says, and find it shod by dawn. But it was never a forge. It is a tomb, five thousand years old. Walk the old road on and you reach the White Horse. Ever left a coin in the stones?

Today is the feast of the Nativity of Mary, the day the old calendar called Latter Marymass. A feast of a birth that was also a feast of seed going back into the ground. For centuries Mary was who Britain walked to, from Walsingham to Penrhys, until the Reformation pulled it down.

360 years ago today, the Great Fire took old St Paul's, a cathedral pilgrims had walked to for centuries. Clearing the rubble to rebuild, Wren was handed a stone from an old grave. One word was left on it. Resurgam. I shall rise again. #bringyourownbeliefs #GreatFireOfLondon #StPauls

Today is St Giles's Day. A hermit who left the world for the forest, sheltered by a deer, lamed by a king's stray arrow. He became the saint of the poor and the outcast, which is why his churches so often stand at the edge of town. Where is your nearest St Giles? #bringyourownbeliefs

Then the Reformation came, and the shrine was pulled down. But the road never quite forgot the way. Today Walsingham is walked again, by the devout, the curious, the grieving, the searching. You don't need to arrive with the right words, or the right beliefs. You only need to set out.

Word spread. For the next five hundred years, kings and paupers and pilgrims of every kind walked the muddy miles to reach it, until it became one of the greatest pilgrimage places in all of medieval Europe.

Kings feared it. Monks learned to predict it. Tonight, we just look up. Britain's deepest eclipse in ten years: begins ~6pm, peaks ~7pm, low in the west. Never look without certified eclipse glasses. Wherever you are, let it be a small pilgrimage.

Roman writers said the druids studied the stars and their motions; older Britons raised monuments that still face the turning sun."

Today, July 15th, is St. Swithin's Day. In popular belief, if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day, it will rain for 40 days, but if it is fair, 40 days of fair weather will follow. So, perhaps this spell of unusual weather will continue?
