Budget 2025 cut $2.7B from Canada’s international assistance. Budget 2026 can reverse that. This week, we’re with six other Canadian organizations calling MPs with one message: no more cuts to international aid. Call your MP today: pihcanada.org/nomorecuts

Paul Farmer had zero patience for certain words: budget, strategic plan, tuition fees. These were polite ways of saying no, and he’d rather work towards finding ways to say YES. This is still the standard at PIH today. What word would you add?

What does it take to deliver health care? Staff, stuff, space, systems, and social support. All five sound simple, but remove one, and the entire health system weakens. Learn more: pihcanada.org/news/pihs-five-ss-ess…

It’s encouraging to see Canada commit $8M to the Ebola response. Now we need to build on that leadership with long-term investments that help governments contain outbreaks before they spiral. Listen to Marleigh’s analysis + read more: pihcanada.org/news/dr-cass...

A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us in Edmonton this week for an evening with Dr. Joia Mukherjee. In a moment of withdrawn aid and deep uncertainty, Joia reminded us that global health equity is still possible—and communities like this help make it real.

National averages can also hide inequality within countries—by race, geography, income, disability and migration status. So the question is not simply “Which country is doing better?” It is: who can reach care, who is excluded, and why?

Governments are responsible for delivering safe care. But accountability without context is incomplete. Colonial extraction, debt and unequal access to financing shape what countries can invest in—and what health systems are forced to postpone.

The picture paints a totally different type of scoreboard. A high ratio reflects whether people can reach staff, blood, surgery, medicines and transport—and whether those systems have been resourced. It is not a measure of a country's commitment to its people. Data: www.who.int/publications...

The World Cup is putting 48 teams side by side across 104 matches. That makes it a useful moment to look beyond the pitch: what happens when we compare countries not by goals, but by whether mothers survive childbirth?

By day four, Grace was breathing without support. On February 22, she and Phebian went home together. This is extraordinary, and we should celebrate it, but we hope that it soon becomes mundane and ordinary—because high-quality care belongs everywhere. Read more: pihcanada.org/news/first-n...

When Phebian saw the on-site dormitory where she could stay near Grace, she said: “It looked like America.” Which is powerful because such a simple sentence underscores a lot. Why should safety, dignity and modern equipment feel like they belong somewhere else?

A few years earlier, staff had the skills but not the infrastructure. Fragile newborns sometimes shared beds. Babies were carried from the operating room in blankets. Now there are 39 specialized NICU beds and temperature-controlled incubators.

It is tempting to call what happened next a miracle. But it's not. It was oxygen. An infant warmer. Continuous monitoring. Skilled nurses ready to act. In other words: a health system doing what it was built to do.

Should global health aid have to benefit Canada too? In some areas, mutual benefit makes sense. But health priorities should be set by the countries and communities receiving support. @mbrender.bsky.social makes the case: pihcanada.org/news/mutual-...

What are we still calling “participation” that is actually just permission to speak? And what would have to change if we meant power-sharing literally?

Maybe the uncomfortable question is not whether our sector believes in justice. I believe many people do. The question is whether our institutions are willing to give up enough control for justice to become operational.

This feels especially urgent right now. Aid is being cut. Health systems are being stretched. Ebola is exposing, again, what happens when investment in care infrastructure is treated as optional until a crisis arrives.

Same with “locally led.” If local partners are trusted to deliver the work but not trusted with flexible funding, long-term strategy, or political judgment, then what has actually been localized? The labour? Or the power?

Youth engagement is a good example. Everyone loves youth energy, youth ideas, youth panels, youth turnout. But are we prepared for youth disagreement? Youth critique? Youth decision-making? That is a much bigger ask.

Because you can't just invite different people into the room and call it a day. You need to change who sets the agenda, who controls the resources, whose expertise is treated as legitimate, and who gets to say no. That is where the language gets tested.

Outbreaks do not happen in a vacuum. The Ebola outbreak in DRC is unfolding after the largest drop in global aid ever recorded, with real consequences for health workers, patients, and the systems meant to contain disease before it spreads. What happens next is a policy choice. Listen below:

@pih.org’s work is about accompaniment: strengthening public systems, working alongside ministries of health, and building care that can last. Because building parallel systems that disappear when a project ends just reinforces the same cycles of dependency and saviourism.

Partners In Health Canada 🇨🇦 @pihcanada.org · 24/05/2026
So when we say health equity is political, this is what we mean. Debt, tax justice, and resource extraction are not “separate” from health. They shape who gets care, and who is expected to wait.

Partners In Health Canada 🇨🇦 @pihcanada.org · 24/05/2026
Aid CAN and does save lives. But when essential care depends on funding that can disappear with a stroke of a pen, that is a power dynamic that deserves interrogation and dismantling in the long term--WITHOUT interrupting immediate life-saving care that current aid structures facilitate.

Neno District has one paved road and 3% household electricity (pihcanada.org/news/cyclone...). Locals say: "If you're not from Neno, you don't know Neno." Getting care has always required going the distance. PIH has spent nearly two decades making sure care goes the distance, too.
