Human work, but directly inspired by quirky results from animal research. Enjoy! theconversation.com/how-you-map-...

How you map numbers in your mind isn’t universal, even among people who read the same language
On your mental number line, are the numbers smaller on the left or on the right? Two comparative cognition researchers explain how culture may influence the orientation – but also may not.

‘Freshwater browning’ is making lakes darker across North America and Europe, and it's changing which fish species thrive. Trout and bass are struggling while pike and walleye are booming 𓆝𓆜𓆝𓆜

Your local fishing hole is getting browner, changing which fish species thrive and which ones struggle
People who are trying to fish – or manage the ecosystems – in darker waters may need to adapt to different water conditions.

Elephants can spontaneously learn to use gestures to request food and objects from humans, suggesting a level of flexibility in their communication previously unrecognized, according to recent research 🐘 buff.ly/dpXf35Q #WorldElephantDay

Do elephants make deliberate gestures to ask for things? Our study says yes
Elephants were found to gesture intentionally when they wanted humans to give them apples. This trait was thought to exist mainly in primates.

I never found the Exorcist to be scary, then or now, but I wasn't raised religious. I also don't find most of the supernatural/ghost movies to be scary (e.g., Conjuring series).

My recent explainer of the science behind studying logical thinking in animals is finally out! 🧪 theconversation.com/humans-and-a...
theconversation.com
Humans and animals can both think logically − but testing what kind of logic they’re using is tricky
How researchers measure the logical reasoning of monkeys, pigeons, rats, fish and wasps shapes how they understand mental processes in animals − and in people.

What to plant in shade -- most of advertised natives in my area are sun or partial sun, and my entire front lawn is under trees. The second concern is upkeep--how much weeding, thinning, etc.will be required before the plants are established.

Those naughty trans people. How dare they to demand equal rights? It's all their own fault, really. By this logic, we'd be still debating whether women should be allowed to vote. Oh wait...

Correct. Parental rights to refuse vaccines but not to provide your kid with a medically approved treatment. Utter insanity.

So tired of this argument. Pray tell, what's a common ground between trans people deserve the same rights as everyone and trans people should not exist? Trans people get 3/5s of rights? I feel like we've tried this before.
