One hand disappears beneath his coat. There is a the rustling sound of thick paper. Pépin produces two copies of playbill from seemingly nowhere and presents it to his two new coworkers. Each is hand drawn in a graphic style with eerie illustrations of the jester playing every role.

He’s immediately wary of being the woman’s next victim. Earnest affection has always been one of his greatest horrors. He begins to squirm like a Grubbin The clown stays a distance away, keeping at least some portion of the knight’s protected body between him and this awfully cheerful old woman.

When she rejects the dripping rose he tosses it over his shoulder into the face of one of the bound burglars. The chevaliere pivots and the clown mimes the over exaggerated sobbing of a devastated cartoon behind her back before following.

“As you wish, I will perform one final trick.” Unexpectedly to everyone in the corridor, the gunman, suffering from severe coulrophobia (poor thing), accidentally fires off the weapon in the direction of the knight and fool. It’s abrasive and the sound ricochets around the palace.

One of the men mutters something about leaving with the Queen-Champion’s crown jewels, implying this was only a distraction. How dare he… “Gentlemen, say no more,” Pépin takes a dramatic step forward, swaying the audience’s attention AND the gun’s barrel back in his direction.

“Careful, ma petit chevaliére. Never turn away willing audience participation.” Grigri twitches. The Sableye’s glimmering eyes are fixed upon the pistol with a sadistic hunger. One of its claws slips discretely behind its back and disappears into thin air as if no-clipping into another realm.

When the pistol shifts toward the Queensguard one of the fool’s eyebrows raises in intrigue. At least ten years his junior and she’s standing between him and a loaded gun. Hilarious! …Perhaps she was more a performer than he’d thought—if the golden plate armor wasn’t a dead giveaway.

A thick shadow seeps from beneath Pépin’s black garb and down his leg to settle heavily on the marble floor before him. A particularly nasty looking clawed imp with crudely cut bloodred gemstones for eyes rises creepily from the pitch black. “It seems my assistant is ready for the next act.”

Pépin’s le Fou’s first day at la ligue had begun with a mandatory online course on sexual harassment. He learned many things. Most of which he felt were quite obvious. The module was now explaining that a joke isn’t necessarily okay just bc the person telling it found it funny. “Quelle tragédie.”
