Passons sur l’agressivité du propos, totalement dénué d’arguments et qui induit en erreur les lecteurs du "Figaro" : loin d’être l’« énième » livre sur le rôle de Vichy dans la déportation des juifs ou d’être un essai « polémique », mon étude, fondée sur des milliers de documents, des centaines de publications et le dépouillement (souvent l’exhumation) d’une quarantaine de fonds privés (d’historiens, de journalistes, d’hommes ou de femmes politiques), expose le processus par lequel la vérité historique sur le rôle criminel de Vichy a fini par s’imposer dans les années 1980-1990. Ce terrain de l’histoire de l’Histoire avait en réalité été fort peu labouré auparavant (le classique d’Henry Rousso "Le Syndrome de Vichy" en 1987 puis les travaux de François Azouvi). Et personne ne l’avait fait à partir des sources, le plus souvent inédites, que je mobilise.
Comment donc expliquer une mauvaise foi aussi évidente, ce ton si ulcéré et épidermique du "Figaro" ? En fait, l’auteur a cerné le point irritant de mon enquête. Les obstacles devant la vérité historique sur Vichy et les juifs n’ont pas seulement été dressés par les pétainistes et les proches de Pierre Laval (dont je révèle qu’ils étaient plus influents qu’on ne le croit), mais aussi, de manière plus subtile, par des universitaires ou journalistes conservateurs, subtile, par des universitaires ou journalistes conservateurs, modérés et libéraux. Trois noms sont cités par l’article du "Figaro" (qui me reproche de les juger sans appel !). Ce sont ceux ce Raymond Aron, de René Rémond et d’Alain-Gérard Slama. Du premier, je montre en effet, en citant des articles parus en 1945, 1976 ou 1979, dans "Les Temps modernes", "Le Figaro" et "L’Express", qu’il a donné crédit à la thèse pétainiste du « moindre mal » défendue par Me Isorni ou Alfred Fabre-Luce. J’essaye de comprendre pourquoi, car c’est a priori évidemment étonnant. L’auteur du "Figaro" préfère opposer aux textes que je cite un extrait hors de propos des "Mémoires" d’Aron. Quant à Slama, je suis plus rapide il est vrai. C’est que ce brillant journaliste a déployé contre Paxton dans les années 1970 et Klarsfeld dans les années 1990 des attaques d’une telle virulence qu’il valait mieux ne pas s’y appesantir – ce que j’en dis s’avère en-dessous de la réalité (ainsi, ces passages péremptoires et peu avisés que je me suis gardé de citer : « Plus le crachat vient de loin, plus il doit être gros. Par bonheur, il tombe à côté », « Paxton n’avait pas, c’est l’évidence, une matière qui lui permît de soutenir sa thèse », « S’il devait y avoir beaucoup d’historiens comme Paxton, j’ai peur que leur rage de trop prouver ne finisse, à la longue, par donner envie de croire que le coupable était innocent »...), donc là encore aucun « jugement » de ma part, mais des faits, des écrits publiés dans "Contrepoint" ou "Le Point". Enfin, Rémond, acteur incontournable de la vie académique française des années 1950 aux années 1990, dont je dresse un portrait nuancé : ce grand mandarin a joué un rôle à la fois de soutien (le renouveau de l’histoire politique, les thèses dirigées sur Vichy, le procès Papon) et de frein (le colloque de fois de soutien (le renouveau de l’histoire politique, les thèses dirigées sur Vichy, le procès Papon) et de frein (le colloque de Sciences Po en 1970, l’affaire du « fichier juif » en 1992-1996) à la vérité historique sur Vichy et les juifs.
Sans être le « donneur de leçons » invétéré et sans « titre » présenté par "Le Figaro", il y a bien une leçon que je retire de cette plongée dans ces décennies de construction du savoir historique et de polémiques mémorielles : sur certains sujets, la vérité ne se trouve pas dans un juste milieu ; en l’espèce, elle ne réside pas dans un compromis entre le point de vue des « bourreaux » et celui des « victimes » ; l’attachement aux convenances, le désir de pacification peuvent être des obstacles à l’avènement de la vérité. À cet égard, l’article du "Figaro", qui fait comme si les récentes falsifications de Zemmour sur Vichy n’existaient pas, et n’avaient eu aucun écho, illustre à merveille les mécanismes de déni que je documente dans mon ouvrage.
