Tonight! Practical Magic is a film that I saw in theaters, but was too young to really understand. I’ve watched it twice in the last few years and it gives me all of the 1990s rom-com warm and fuzzies. Thoughts coming soon.
The theater intro card for Practical Magic 2.

The Virginian Vault is back this week as a continue my journey through season two. The episode? “The Intruders”. Kids, I love a good Darren McGavin gust starting role.

My favorite pastime is watching the Perry Mason tv movies from the early 1990s and playing “spot the Denver locations”.

“….audiences mustn’t be insulted by being given too much. They have to work. They must be given a suggestion of what the emotion is and be allowed to interpret it themselves.” - Allan Dwan as quoted in “Who the Devil Made It” by Peter Bogdanovich.

I just learned it’s Nancy Olson’s 98th birthday today. Kids, there was a long time when 16 year old me wanted to be Betty Schaefer when I grew up.
Nancy Olson looks across at an unseen character in a screen capture from Sunset Boulevard.

Now Watching: Fanny Hill (1964). A film I wasn’t expecting to find on Kanopy of all places.

Overheard on Tattletales…
Overheard on Tattletales

Two Questions, Same Episode.

"When you're in your car, do you find that a beautiful and provacative woman walking down the street can be hazardous to your driving?"

"Before you got married, when he expressed his opinions, did you ever pretend to agree with him?"

Piercing Pop Culture began as a space for movie reviews but has evolved into an oral history and preservation project highlighting the often-overlooked figures in media. The performers the algorithm forgets. We did not deserve Beverly Garland. Substack link in bio.

Was I expecting this weird little quirky take on The Wizard of Oz? No, not at all. I walked out with an epiphany, though. We do not deserve John Slattery. His work in Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass might be one of my favorites of the year. 📽️ 🎬
