So Nicholas Kristof is a sublime idiot for reporting that this happened."

Stancil's other issue is he sees people getting mad at him as validation - if lots of people are mad at him that proves he isn't audience captured.
Tbh I am obviously subject to the social media reward structure, which is why I paradoxically can feel more confident that I'm at least thinking for myself when everyone is angry at me. The abuse sucks but it's the POSITIVE reinforcement that truly breaks people for goodmy view is that unless people are yelling at you, you're probably being captured by your audience. eventually your audience will want you to say things that seem obviously incorrect, the emotional incentive is to reduce friction by saying it, and the best bulwark is probably just stubbornness. I guess the risk here is you brain starts to view conflict as a reward - evidence of your own rightness - so I also sort of think that it's important that the conflict still make you miserable. basically the key to avoiding audience capture is to be eternally stuck in a hell of your own creationAs far as I can tell the only way to be sure you’re not just saying what you know your audience wants to hear is if your audience clearly doesn’t want to be hearing itKind of yes, actually: most commentators are audience captured. They say the things they know their audience wants to hear, which is why they keep it. They are providing a certain kind of content, and can’t really deviate from that content. I am unusual in that my audience hates me.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS FOR POLITICAL MESSAGING?

you have to navigate the fragmented environment. any single message on a single platform will have a tiny audience. the best way to reach a large audience is to have your message REPEATED across many platforms. that dramatically changes the kinds of messages that are most effective. the consideration of "what sort of message will the largest number of people find agreeable?" now has to be balanced against "what sort of message will be repeated, discussed, shared, talked about the most?" in practice, you have to balance the imperative of broad appeal against the imperative of virality. a very appealing message, that doesn't induce people to share it, will reach a much smaller audience than a more controversial message that gets talked about across many platforms.I can tell you why: because social media gives you attentional reward if you go viral, and if you post enough, you realize that really overheated, doomy stuff, particularly aimed at establishment targets, reliably goes viral. So you end constantly trying to fit every idea into that frame I know this because I have been quite successful at getting stuff to go viral by putting it in an outraged, doomy frame, often aimed at establishment Democrats. The frustration was real and I stopped when I felt they were doing better. But that TONE - it was finetuned for max audience reachThis is literally the entire ballgame in digital media. You have to pick messages that get shared and go viral, or you will have no audience, no matter how often you post or advertise. You can dump 500 million dollars into modern media and have an effective viewership of 0. There is no magic Posting Schedule that will break you out of this. You have to be interesting, authentic, compelling. Conflict draws eyeballs. Blunt honesty draws eyeballs. "I can't believe he just said that" draws eyeballs.

The couple now owns two properties in Chicago — one four-unit and one three-unit building, the latter purchased in 2021 — as well as two single-family homes in Columbus, Ohio, that operate as Airbnbs. The Chicago properties bring in around $10,600 per month, while combined mortgage-related expenses total between $6,000 and $7,000 per month. They handle maintenance by using the leftover rental income as a reserve fund rather than treating it as personal spending money.

Platner went to the United States Marine Corps School of Infantry and deployed to Iraq in 2005. “It was a relatively calm deployment for the first few months, mostly because the Battle of Fallujah just happened, and much of the insurgent activity in the area had been crushed in that fight,” he told me. Later, while he was on patrol at Abu Ghraib, there was an attack on the prison. (It was nearly two years after human-rights abuses were first reported at the prison; Platner was not involved.) “That was my first real taste of combat,” he said. It was an odd juxtaposition discussing Platner’s experiences in the Iraq War while looking out at the islands on Frenchman Bay. “I loved infantry combat,” he said. “It was like this kind of high-stakes game where everything you do matters and you need to make decisions under immense amounts of stress that are going to impact both your life, but more importantly, the lives of your men.”

New order, I'm kinda worried they didn't actually turn the plane that was in the air around and are waiting for it to land and say "oh too late"
MINUTE ORDER: The Court ordered the Defendants to file a status report by August 31, 2025, at 4:00 PM. They have not done so. The Court ORDERS the Defendants to show cause why a status report was not filed by that deadline. The Defendants remain under their obligation to file a status report addressing the current status of the deplaning of putative class members. If all class members have not been deplaned and moved back to the custody of ORR, the Defendants should advise when they expect that to occur. The Court further ORDERS the Plaintiffs to file a status report by August 31, 2025, at 6:30 PM, that addresses their understanding of whether the putative class members have been deplaned and moved to ORR. Signed by Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan on 8/31/2025. (lcak)

That isn't true, though, the NOVA classification absolutely considers it ultraprocessed if it has a single ingredient they think is bad.
Ultra-processed foods are operationally distinguishable from processed foods by the presence of food substances of no culinary use (varieties of sugars such as fructose, high-fructose corn syrup, 'fruit juice concentrates', invert sugar, maltodextrin, dextrose and lactose; modified starches; modified oils such as hydrogenated or interesterified oils; and protein sources such as hydrolysed proteins, soya protein isolate, gluten, casein, whey protein and 'mechanically separated meat') or of additives with cosmetic functions (flavours, flavour enhancers, colours, emulsifiers, emulsifying salts, sweeteners, thickeners and anti-foaming, bulking, carbonating, foaming, gelling and glazing agents) in their list of ingredients.

If you add whey protein, fruit juice concentrates, corn syrup, to anything it immediately becomes category 4, ultraprocessed. Hell, if you drop a pinch of salt onto an egg it becomes category 3
Industrially manufactured food products made up of several ingredients (formulations) including sugar, oils, fats and salt (generally in combination and in higher amounts than in processed foods) and food substances of no or rare culinary use (such as high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, modified starches and protein isolates). Group 1 foods are absent or represent a small proportion of the ingredients in the formulation. Processes enabling the manufacture of ultra-processed foods include industrial techniques such as extrusion, moulding and pre-frying; application of additives including those whose function is to make the final product palatable or hyperpalatable such as flavours, colourants, non-sugar sweeteners and emulsifiers; and sophisticated packaging, usually with synthetic materials. Processes and ingredients here are designed to create highly profitable (low-cost ingredients, long shelf-life, emphatic branding), convenient (ready-to-(h)eat or to drink), tasteful alternatives to all other Nova food groups and to freshly prepared dishes and meals. Ultra-processed foods are operationally distinguishable from processed foods by the presence of food substances of no culinary use (varieties of sugars such as fructose, high-fructose corn syrup, 'fruit juice concentrates', invert sugar, maltodextrin, dextrose and lactose; modified starches; modified oils such as hydrogenated or interesterified oils; and protein sources such as hydrolysed proteins, soya protein isolate, gluten, casein, whey protein and 'mechanically separated meat') or of additives with cosmetic functions (flavours, flavour enhancers, colours, emulsifiers, emulsifying salts, sweeteners, thickeners and anti-foaming, bulking, carbonating, foaming, gelling and glazing agents) in their list of ingredients.[10]

Government was arguing that "DOGE employees" is only people working directly for DOGE. Judge says no, it's everyone working on behalf of DOGE even if they're volunteers or working for DOGE in other departments, and you have to give the requested information on those people too
3
As a result, “or otherwise works for DOGE” covers individuals who “work on behalf of
DOGE” but are not formally employed by USDS. Those “who work on behalf of DOGE,” in turn,
include all individuals that defendant agencies have onboarded to implement the “DOGE
Agenda”3—including those that the agencies have hired directly or through detail agreements.

The faulty lab leak narrative leaves out some crucial details. Most lab leak proponents don’t mention that most major Chinese cities have one or more active coronavirus laboratories. The Chinese government established these laboratories after multiple spillovers of the first SARS-CoV in 2002 through 2004, which caused approximately 8,000 cases of severe respiratory disease worldwide and at least 744 deaths.

A professor resigned after saying that students should be able to do blackface www.cbsnews.com/news/yale-te...
Christakis came under attack in October for her response to a request from the Intercultural Affairs Committee that students avoid wearing racially insensitive costumes, such as Native American headgear, turbans or blackface. She wrote in an email to students living in the residence hall where she's an administrator that they should be able to wear any costume they want.

"Is there no room anymore for a child or young person to be a little bit obnoxious, a little bit inappropriate or provocative or, yes, offensive?" she wrote. "American universities were once a safe space not only for maturation but also for a certain regressive, or even transgressive, experience; increasingly, it seems, they have become places of censure and prohibition."

The issues underpinning this debate are bigger than politics. If our government is going to fund science, it should be good science. And what better way to promote government efficiency — supposedly a key imperative of the second Trump administration — than to insist that federal dollars flow toward well-designed and properly executed research?

Bret Stephens is so fucking stupid and only knows how to push his stupid talking points
Stephens: I’d say the lowest-quality institutions created since the 1990s have names like Columbia and Berkeley — these are essentially factories of Maoist cadres taught by professors whose political views ranged almost exclusively from the left to the far left.
Cottom: I would counter, Bret, that the lowest-quality institutions are the for-profit colleges created as paradigmatic economic theories of exchange value that churned out millions of students in “career ready” fields who found it hard to get a job worth the debt — colleges not unlike the one that our current dear leader once ran as a purely economic enterprise.
