Sakiori is a weave. Sashiko is a stitch. Both are wonderful applications that serve very different purposes. An easy way to remember each is: sakiori…reuse; sashiko…reinforce.
Textile Library graphic about sakiori. A close-up photograph shows coarse woven cloth made from reused fabric strips in cream, tan, brown, pink, and orange, with frayed fibers and irregular texture. Below, a dark blue panel reads “Sakiori →” and “Sakiori weavers turn old fabric into new cloth, carrying its colors into another pattern and purpose.” The header reads “Textile Library” with the tagline “Learning about heritage textile craft just got cool.”Textile Library graphic about sashiko. A close-up photograph shows dark indigo cotton densely covered with horizontal rows of pale running stitches, with a vertical stitched seam through the center and visible signs of age and wear. Ever wonder what the hidden world of a 0.9 × 0.72 inch (2.3 × 1.8 cm) section of a 19th-century Japanese boro textile panel is like? …I know!… Same! So I decided to find out, and it’s more beautiful than I could have imagined. All of this is happening in less than 1 inch! #boro #sashiko #textileart

You won't find a pair of 19th-century tabi like these at any cool & trendy fashion boutique. Though I'm sure we all can think of a few brands that owe these old soles a very special thank-you note. 🫶
A pair of 19th-century Japanese indigo tabi sitting on top of a pile of other old tabi. The main pair is covered in sashiko stitching and other traditional repairs, with white cotton lining peeking out at the top. Underneath the main pair are more worn tabi with faded cotton blues, cream and reds, and there’s an old wooden duck decoy sitting behind them.

Enjoy a moment with the skill and mastery that went into creating this beautiful Moroccan Fez embroidery textile. I sit in awe of the human hand that crafted this lovely 2,300 sq. inch geometric work of art over a century ago in northwest Africa. Just marvelous.

I learn so much by studying closeup swatches like these. Not just about vintage fabric techniques & traditions, but also what feels to me like the timeless practice of letting go.

Boro is when repairs become the #textile. This late-Meiji Japanese #indigo futon cover (c.1900) shows what repair can become over generations. Every true #boro textile is as unique as the stories behind it. So happy I got to spend time with this lovely piece. My studio feels different without it.

An antique Japanese textile sample book that has survived the years is a rare find on its own. One that has adorable sketches from its prior life as a Meiji period schoolgirl’s drawing book…precious.

I just may keep this beautiful French glazed chintz textile for myself. 🤗 I absolutely love the deep saturation of the ramoneur ground & the thoughtful floral design contrast…stunning. Such an incredible example of the human skill and passion that went into making heritage textiles.
Vertical photo of a dark floral textile draped diagonally across a light surface, with a small dark cat figurine behind it at upper left. The fabric fills most of the frame in soft folds, showing scattered red, blue, cream, and green floral motifs against a deep brown-black ground, with a warm mottled tan backdrop backing the scene.Close-up vertical photo of dark brown-black fabric filling nearly the entire frame, patterned with large and small floral clusters in muted red, blue, cream, green, and pale yellow. Soft folds and creases run through the cloth, with a narrow strip of warm tan surface visible along the lower right edge.

Repair and reuse span cultures and generations, and the wonderful darning on this 18th-century French grain sack is such a lovely example. I love holding textiles like these and imagining the times they’ve seen.

The amount of time I spend obsessing over packaging is just a little embarrassing. But I love it and I think the recipients do too. 🤗

If you’ve ever seen one of these silk Hazara #embroidery #textiles in person, you may have noticed how they seem to shimmer and reflect light differently, depending on your perspective. Incredibly, that’s by design. Skill, silk thread and stitching technique come together to make the effect happen.

Some pieces are more difficult to let go of than others. This lovely antique French tapestry was one that I had to spend an extra moment with as I prepared to send the piece to its new home over the weekend.
Antique French woven tapestry shown in full against a white background. Two long-legged birds stand beside a blue stream in a lush pastoral landscape of flowers, broad leaves, trees, pale mountains, and a small domed pavilion. Muted olive, ochre, rust, blue, cream, and pink tones reveal the textile’s aged woven texture, framed by a dark border.Antique French woven tapestry depicting two long-legged birds beside a blue stream, surrounded by dense flowers, leafy plants, and trees. The birds are woven in rust, coral, pale blue, cream, and brown, with pale mountains and a small domed pavilion in the distance. One bird stretches its rust-red neck upward, while the other bends toward the ground with a large rust, cream, and pale blue wing raised behind it. Perhaps a little inspiration for you as this 1800s boro textile panel is for me today. Somehow it seems that right now is always a wonderful time to begin a new boro project. I’m pretty sure I recall a great philosopher having said those very words at some point in my textile journey. Pretty sure.

Long before hashtags there was 井, the Chinese character for a water well. The symbol appears in textiles made by extraordinarily skilled women of southwest China who wove it into textiles and fabric for generations. I love that something this beautiful can also hold so much human history. 💗
