I did not “announce” that Shireen was a citizen of the United States. And when I wrote about her murder, I insisted to my editors that, if I must mention this fact, I would refer to her as a carrier of a US passport, not as an American citizen. Why contribute—even if only with a simple phrase—to a hierarchy of lives where citizenry, like race, class, gender, “civility,” plays a role in determining whether someone deserves compassion or due diligence? I wanted the world to stand still over the death of a Palestinian, regardless of qualifiers. But that didn’t matter: within hours, the news spread like wildfire. Her passport was the talking point. Shireen was an American and her alleged Americanness swiftly made her human.

“You discredit the messenger as a way of discrediting the message” has long been an Israeli mantra. 14 For our plight cannot be “discredited,” but our characters can be. They turn us into criminals of thought, guilty of our rage and grudges, of our natural responses to brutalization. They test our answers against the viewer’s inherent bias. The bombs raining down on the besieged Gaza Strip become secondary, if not entirely irrelevant, to our televised trials. We die a lot as defendants.

From the book discussion w/ #OctaviaEButler at the end of #ParableOfTheTalents: The problem, of course, with throwing people away is that they don't go away. They stay in the society that turned its back on them. And whether that society likes it or not, they find all sorts of things to do. #BookSky
Photo of my kindle paperwhite with the quote from the above post highlighted. The entire text on the page reads:

even less well-funded public schools..? Well, tough!
The problem, of course, with throwing people away is that they don't go away. They stay in the society that turned its back on them. And whether that society likes it or not, they find all sorts of things to do.
Here in California, a few years ago voters passed an initiative intended to prevent illegal aliens from using our schools and hospitals. The courts have so far prevented this fantastically stupid law from being enforced, but what bothers me is, a majority of voting Californians thought it would be a really good idea to share our state with large numbers of sick, uneducated people. Of course, the true goal was to force the illegals out, but as long as there are jobs here even dirty, ill-paid, dangerous jobs—needy people from other con-tries will come here. Best they maintain their health, and in doing so, maintain the public health. And best their children go to school and become the educated Americans that the country will need for a positive future. Parable of the Talents and Parable of the Sower, after all, are about the kind of society we might wind up with otherwise.

PALESTINE WAIL

Double Bind

To secure the world's sympathy
Palestinians must be saintly -
yet, Israel has universal trust
despite continuing to act monstrously.

Now, tell us the difference
between Palestinians & Hamas?
I sigh and say, again, Palestinians
are an innocent people
who want only to live in peace

Caught between a rock, called Israel,
and a hard place that is Hamas.

What a great first day! Thanks to all of you, we’ve raised $81 towards my goal. I can’t express enough how much I appreciate every one of you. Please continue to share with others if you can so we can help Mandy and Lara Sirdah.

I’m also happy to report that I identified 8 total species today: blue jay, American crow, northern mockingbird, northern cardinal, house sparrow, turkey vulture, Carolina wren, and white-throated sparrow. I wasn’t counting on the white-throated sparrows! They left in the spring and I knew they’d be back for autumn/winter, but I wasn’t sure when. They like to sleep in our bamboo and I thought I heard one last night, but was like nah. And the the sun set this evening and there were a bunch of voices! They made me so happy. This is why birding is so special.

Until tomorrow!A turkey vulture soaring high in a deep blue sky with white wisps of cloud past a green-but-turning-yellow deciduous tree. It is a large bird that appears all dark because of the distance but the two-toned undersides of the wings are still visible in shades of “dark”, lighter on the entire trailing edge of the wings. Its wings make a V shape. The vulture wing “fingers” are visible as well.

Hi everyone! The first day of the birdathon for Birders of Palestine is going well so far. I saw and heard four species so far this morning: 4 American Crows, 3 Blue Jays, 1 Northern Mockingbird, and 2 Northern Cardinals. I was extra excited about the cardinals because one was an adult male and the other was an all brown juvenile! Back in August I watched three cardinals hatch and fledge and hang around the yard and I'm glad to see that at least one survived and to see how it's grown!

l've also received three donations so far: thank you so much! I appreciate all of you.

Lily’s a cute unicorn, but she’s not doing well. She’s lost weight, will eat a food once and then refuse it…..vet seems lost and says prognosis is questionable at this point. #MinPinSky #MinPin #MiniaturePinscher #DogSky
Lily, a small black and tan Miniature Pinscher dressed in a pink unicorn (with horn!) hoodie, laying on a black with white words blanket on top of a blue cooling pad and gray dog bed. She’s facing the camera but her eyes are hard to see. Her black head and tan snout with black nose and tan chin are visible.

I was grateful to spot a male monarch butterfly today. He looks so fresh and new, he must have eclosed in the last couple of days, maybe even today. He was fueling up on some purple aster. He’ll be on his way to Mexico soon! #MonarchButterfly #pollinators #migrators #butterflies #MonarchButterflies

A selfie of me, a fat white woman with brown eyes and brown hair that is hidden by an orange Hello Kitty pumpkin hat with green stem, white ears, and red bow. I’m looking St the camera and smiling slightly with my mouth closed. I’m wearing a back tank top. I’m holding a black plague doctor birb with a white face, black hat, and little lantern.

Today is my Uncle Tony’s birthday. He would have been 59. He’s been gone for 25 years and was taken too soon by a horrific accident right down the street from my then house. I miss him.
Photo of Uncle Tony, a blue-eyed white man, circa 1985 with thick dark brown hair that starts to curl from his ears to his neck. He has a faint mustache and even fainter “beard” (it looks like he just didn’t shave for a couple of days). He’s wearing a dark collared shirt. He’s looking at the camera with a sort of smile and his teeth showing. He wasn’t a fan of pictures.

Have another #birb. #NorthernCardinal #birds #BabyBirds #BirdSky #cardinal #birding #NorthernCardinals #cardinals
A fledgling Northern Cardinal perched on a crepe myrtle with lots of green leaves and a red brick wall in the background. The bird’s back is facing the camera and it’s looking over its left shoulder at the camera. One dark eye can be seen as well as its brown beak and its beige-colored “baby lips”. It doesn’t yet have tail feathers so its back end kind of looks like a hamster. It has a miniature fluffy dark brown crest, dark brown back, and brownish-tan breast underside.

Okay so we have baby cardinals. It is both stressful (mostly because of the dogs, *ahem* Lily) and adorable. #NorthernCardinal #BabyBirds #fledglings #cardinals #birds #birding #BirdSky #NorthernCardinals
A fledgling Northern Cardinal perched on the bottom rail of an outdoor chair against a background of concrete ground. The bird is facing the camera so that both dark eyes can be seen as well as its brown beak and its beige-colored “baby lips”. It’s right leg and foot is very visible and appears long. Its tiny claws can be seen. It doesn’t yet have tail feathers so its back end kind of looks like a hamster. It has a miniature fluffy dark brown crest, dark brown back, light brown head, brownish-tan breast, and tan feet.
