designing Fiction in the Space Between was a lot of fun, translating a body of songs into games / game pieces. And also the booklet! Flipping it so that you cut up and tear bits off my hometown was great, and then to use a map of the Aboriginal exclusion zone made it better (if only detail I notice)
A photo of a ttrpg zine, titled Fiction in the Space Between. It is a collection of games and game materials inspired by Tracy Chapman songs.

love these little guys
part of a page, decorated in a flemish medieval style. There is an Abides fish creature fighting a hedgehog with fruit in its spines. The page begins to describe a game, 'Marginalia' in which you "play scrives doodling fantastical creatures in the annals during an uneventful year."

Beautiful marginalia
Two creatures drawn by two different people who hadn’t seen what the other drew. One is a bouquet of flowers with a tentacle base. The other is a worm with teeth culminating in what might be a stinky sock

As part of my Tracy Chapman inspired games anthology, I made a safety tool based on the song ‘Open Arms’. It’s not doing anything revolutionary but I like making the pause & play process explicit, it helps everyone at the table. Also the anthology came as a CD booklet and that’s very fun ahaha.
3. Open Arms
When you declare you are using this move, the game pauses. Choose as many of the below as you’d like. Play resumes when everyone confirms they are ready.

There is a list of options, such as go to the toilet or talk out of character, including a blank line.

A (draft) preview of one of the sillier minigames in Veritable Tales, in case you missed it! The noble could be describing a mythological creature, a dinosaur, a Pokémon... have fun with it! www.kickstarter.com/projects/sun...
Image Description
Beasts Abroad: One player is an Arrogant Noble who has recently returned from abroad. The rest are the Hapless Artists commissioned by the Noble to depict the bizarre beasts encountered in faraway lands. They will need drawing materials.
Unfortunately the Noble is a poor wordsmith. They describe a creature encountered on their travels as terribly as they can, whilst touting their own valour. Purple prose is encouraged: invoke the senses, cast aspertions and sprout allegories.
Once the Noble is satisfied with their description the Artists present their works of art. Discuss, extol, flatter, then the player to their left becomes the noble. Repeat until everyone has played the arrogant noble. Then transfer your favourite drawings to the margins and write in the annals:
"...STRANGE BEASTS WERE SIGHTED ABROAD."

I need to head to bed but instead I've spent way too long doodling a sample Veritable Tales manuscript (not an illuminated manuscript - no gold ink). Was fun! For ease in actual play I'd probably go with a printout medieval border instead and we'd all colour it in during play.
A notepad with a thick border full of doodles. It reads:
"The Veritable Tales
In the first year of Empress Ai's reign... she was crowned with her father's crown. The people called her kind, scrupulous, marriageable and weak.
In the second year of Empress Ai's reign... a nobleman returned from strange lands and employed all the notable artistes in depicting the beasts sighted there. (A picture of a strange two legged beast with three eyes and no ears is here).
In the third year of Empress Ai's reign... there was a great pestilence and many died. Their eulogies filled the streets.
In the fourth year of Empress Ai's reign... the nobles competed in a great hunt. Lord Go won -- he caught a tiger.
In the fifth year of Empress Ai's reign... nothing of note happened so we turned our hands to filling the margins. (A doodle of a simple fish on legs)."

“What’s upstairs? They can’t talk”
“Based? Based on what?”
