I went to the beach with my family yesterday and when we got back and pulled into the driveway, I look to my left and look what I see! This is a Banded Sphinx Moth! It was just a little bit smaller than my palm! 😍 #wildlifephotography #nature #mothsofbluesky #moth #moths #bandedsphinx #sphinx

I was at the beach with my family when I spotted it, there were about five of them resting in a tree. Luckily I brought my camera! 😁

Listed as a "species of greatest conservational need", Atala butterflies were once almost wiped out due to over harvesting of the Coontie palm. Thanks to more use of the plant in landscaping, they are making a comeback! #nature #photography #atala #butterfly #butterflies #butterfliesofbluesky

Anhingas differ from other waterbirds because their feathers aren't waterproof! This is why you'll often see Anhingas like this one drying out their wings! 😍😁 #birds #birding #birder #birdwatching #birdsofbluesky #birdsoftheworld #wildlifephotography #nature #myphoto #photographersofbluesky #🪶

✨ Limpkin appreciation post! ✨ Fun fact: Limpkins are considered indicator species because of their reliance on the Apple Snail as a food source! The availability of Apple Snails in wetlands indicates a healthy aquatic environment! #birds #birding #birder #birdwatching #birdsofbluesky #🪶 #limpkin

Saw my first Eastern Meadowlark the other week! 😍 The quality of the photos vary, as the first was taken with a longer lens. Of course, when I finally get the long lens out, it turns around to show me its backside 😂 #birds #birding #birder #birdwatching #birdsofbluesky #birdsoftheworld #nature #🪶

Happy Friday, Blueskyers 💙 Here's a tree that made me happy...hopefully it can bring you some joy in such a dark time...struggling to see the hope in these bleak times, but when I look to nature I can see it... I hope you all are well 🙏💚 #nature #trees #hope #naturephotography #blooms #8647

I finally managed to track down a Loggerhead Shrike this morning! This bird is also called the Butcher bird because it impales its prey on sharp objects like barbed wire! 😱 Talk about brutal! #birds #birding #birder #birdwatching #birdsofbluesky #birdsoftheworld #nature #myphoto #🪶 #shrike

There's another bird called the Grey-Headed Swamphen that looks VERY similar to the Purple Gallinule that also frequents similar habitats so maybe you're thinking of that 😀

110

Nicole R Abbott @picsbynikk.bsky.social · 16/06/2025

Great question! I did some quick research and it looks like the Common Gallinule and Purple Gallinule are not the same thing as a swamphen, however, they are very closely related, both being in the rail family.

Nicole R Abbott @picsbynikk.bsky.social · 16/06/2025

It's hard to believe these are the same kind of bird, but they are both Purple Gallinules! Crazy how much they change as they grow 😍 #birds #birding #birder #birdwatching #birdsofbluesky #birdsoftheworld #wildlifephotography #nature #photography #photographersofbluesky #photographersunite #🪶
