These experiences are not unique to Spokane. The nonprofit industrial complex has always been an instrument of capitalism. Liberation in this field cannot occur until we address this head on and stop profiting from the oppression of the very people we are trying to serve.

Dysfunctional leadership, poor communication, discriminatory practices, and lack of liberatory ethics has resulted in layoffs targeting marginalized employees who are also experiencing genocide at the hands of the federal government. The intersection of these experiences is frankly alarming.

There's not really much else to say, but there is a thought that I keep returning to and reflecting on as I process through this grief: Over the last 5+ years, I have repeatedly and constantly seen trans, disabled, BIPOC professionals taken advantage of and then discarded by nonprofits in Spokane.

Yesterday, I was told that my position at my job has been eliminated and I have been let go, effective immediately. I was not permitted to say farewell to any youth, clients, or colleagues. I was told to clean out my desk and get out. It took roughly ten minutes.

This was a BEAST. Probably ~15hrs (or roughly 20 Star Trek The Next Generation episodes) inking freehand with my acrylic pens. Also, I think we should stop using "minutes" and "hours" and start measuring time in Star Trek episode lengths.

this is particularly prevalent in social service nonprofits btw. there are no accommodation contracts, no HR, no recourse. your accommodations are always dependent on how much "need" there is. when things get busy, the expectation is that you will perform able-bodiedness without accommodation.

too many disabled people are let go or melt from jobs when the "burden" of accommodation becomes too much. we're never told it's because of our disabilities, but we always know. ask any disabled person who's been let go from a job.

worse still, allowing us accommodations is often viewed as a form of "healing" by employers who are uneducated in how disability actually works (transformative). accommodations are a tool to ease symptoms, not to cure the cause, and the need for them isn't going to vanish after a set time. (2/2)
