Primo maggio! Su coraggio! Io ti AMOOO! Happy Labour Day, everyone. We shall overcome
2 huge terracotta platters, the one in the bottom containing grilled ribs and sausages, the top one containing raw vegetables: artichokes, carrots, fennels, endives. Typical post-pasta spread in Tuscany, Italy.

Spring has sprung on a mossy old wall, in all shades of green and some orange explosion, shuttered by red. Watercolour painting on handmade cotton rag paper by Khadi, roughly 31x42 cm. #watercolor #ArtYear #art #BskyArt #AbstractPainting #red
Watercolour painting on heavily textured paper: at the bottom, mossy green stripes with brownish undertones, followed by thinner strips of much darker, ominous green, above which a narrow strip of bright orange explored. Colder shades of emerald green above, with more orange still. 2/3 of the way up, two vertical rectangles in cadmium red in the middle, are encased by a deep scarlet frame.

Redder than ever today, with sepia, mauve and violet undertones, liberated by the fluo Opera rose at the top. Watercolour painting on handmade cotton rag paper by Khadi, roughly 31x42 cm #watercolor #ArtYear #art #BskyArt #AbstractPainting #red
Watercolour painting: stripes of deep red up to more than half way, followed by maude and violet, then dirty red again, and fluo pink at the top, with a wide but thin opaque deep red "window" on top of the intersection beteen violet and dirty red. Heavily textured and also a bit splattered, with splotches of colours interactiing on each stripe, and lagoons of paler colour in places. Like the phases of an old building, painted over many times. On handmade cotton rag paper by Khadi.

Deeper and darker and with a lot of mauve, but still, very red. Strata and strata. With dirt and grit. Watercolour painting on handmade cotton rag paper by Khadi, roughly 31x42 cm #watercolor #ArtYear #art #BskyArt #AbstractPainting
Watercolour painting: stripes of deep red at the bottom, then almost half the way p mauve and sepia come in, bringing darkness, alternating until the top, with occasional splotches of red sneaking in. Heavily textured and also a bit splattered, with colours interaction. Like the phases of an old building, painted over many times. A red opaque square painted in acrylic sits on top of the stripes, towards the top, with a dark pink thin wide frame running around it. On handmade cotton rag paper by Khadi.

My red phase. (I may stray out of it occasionally, or even for long stretches, but I will always get back to red.) Watercolour painting on handmade cotton rag paper by Khadi, roughly 31x42 cm #watercolour #ArtYear #art #BskyArt

RESIST. #drawing #ArtYear #DailyArt
An indigo blue sketchbook open on a rustic pinewood table. An intricate abstract line drawing in electric blue marker occupies the entire spread. Vertical curvy lines describe organic columns on the page, with horizontal wavey lines covering the distance between them. Shorter nervatures fill these smaller spaces, creating a leave-like effect. Occasional pockets of silver punctuate the pattern. The indigo blue sketchbook with the electric blue drawing, and the marshmallow tail of a ginger cat named Ciro describing a semicircle on top of it. Quality control in action

I have to write a sales page for my workshop and I hate that so much it makes me come out in hives, so here’s a bright pink and green and yellow happy watercolour painting celebrating spring, to take my mind off it instead. #watercolor #art #DailyArt #painting
Watercolour painting on a rough pinewood table, with painting paraphernalia around it: a palette, a brush, some half godets. Stripes of blended pink and green with hints of yellow and brown are intersected by short sharp small rectangles and lines in bright pink, dark magenta, green, yellow.

My abstract, colour-based take on the city of Venice, Italy. Watercolour painting commissioned by a beloved friend just before she left us. In loving memory of Sharon 💙 #DailyArt #Watercolor
Watercolour painting representing my abstract, colour-based take on Venice: horizontal stripes in shades of indigo, grey and turquoise for the sea, and dark brown, yellow, pink with a trim of gold for the buildings and the glorious art.

#OnlyBeautifulThings Ciro’s sister suddenly left us on 19 Dec, and 2 days later he nearly went, too - but the vets and I managed to persuade him to stay a while longer. Here he was this morning, in all his orange magnificence
Ciro, a 16-year-old ginger cat, lying on the bed in a semicircle, with his front paws slightly raised ready to make biscuits in the air, looking at the camera sideways.

My sister's bedroom walls are purple, so I gave her this painting for Christmas, thinking it would look perfect on her walls. Colours suggested by the natural display I had on my terrace at the time of painting.
A watercolour painting sitting on a rustic pinewood table, seen from above. Thick horizontal and vertical stripes in a deep green with bright pink, purple and ochre stains, punctuated by much shorter and thinner rectangles and lines in all those colours. A jar with purple-ish water sits on the top left, above the painting, with a brush and watercolour half-pans to the right. The colours were inspired by the plants that were thriving on my terrace at the time I painted this. Purple chives flowers in focus against the green blurred background of the rest of the plant. A succulent plant looking a bit like a rose (a type of Echeveria), with green leaves with a purple edge and drops of dew.

And when @amberhinds.bsky.social pointed out on Twitter that that "weirdness" presents accessibility issues, WordPress' not-so-Benevolent Dictator For Life, Matt Mullenweg, accused her of providing a net negative contribution, adding the frankly silly Rothko comparison later. x.com/photomatt/st...
Tweet by Matt Mullenweg on Jan 3 2025, saying:
"You’re tipping into net negative contribution territory."Tweet by Matt Mullenweg on Jan 3 2025, saying:
"Like at what point do you say a Rothko painting isn't high contrast enough?"

The therapeutic side effects on heart, body and soul of a glass of Franciacorta in the winter sun, sipped in the company of loved ones, in the Piazza to end all piazzas. Happy holidays from Siena, everyone 🥂
A glass of Franciacorta, an Italian sparkling wine, on an table outdoors in piazza del Campo, Siena, Italy. A festive red flower decoration is sitting to the right of the glass, while the midday winter sun is gleaming above it. The medieval Torre del Mangia and Palazzo Pubblico are in the background.

Morning sky blue on night sky blue. Plus, a ginger cat on his favourite seat. #ArtAdventCalendar
Drawing in pale blue acrylic marker on a deep indigo blue sketchbook. Wavey lines cross the spread vertically from the top and diagonally, creating spaces between them that are joined by patterns of curvy horizontal lines, also filled by rows of shorter lines. Sometimes the patterns look like waves, sometimes rolling hills, some other times they look like leaves with veins. Detail of the previous drawing, showing patterns of rolling hills and waves drawn in pale blue acrylic ink on an indigo sketchbook The ginger cat called Ciro sitting neatly on top of the indigo sketchbook, opened at the spread with the pale blue drawing, and placed on a rustic pinewood table. Ciro is seen from above, his head slightly turned to the left, you can see the tip of his nose and his whiskers sticking out proudly.

Pink pink pink pink pink pink pink… pink moon Gnarly trees under a pink moon light (drawn while listening to Nick Drake 🩷) #ArtAdventCalendar
Drawing in acrylic markers on an A5 sheet of red paper: a pink tree on the left, described by curved lines creating smaller spaces filled by shorter lines, in a flowing pattern resembling the bark of a tree. A gnarled silver branch juts in diagonally from the bottom right intersecting with the branches of the pink tree at the top. A third gnarled tree in pale violet is at the bottom, branching out to the left and right.

Hey Blue And there is a song for you Ink on a pin Underneath the skin An empty space to fill in #ArtAdventCalendar
Intricate line drawing in electric blue acrylic marker, on indigo blue, heavily textured handmade paper. Curvy lines cross the paper vertically and diagonally, intersecting and creating smaller spaces, which are filled up by shorter lines that describe semi regular patterns similar to leaves with veins. There is no space left on the A5 sheet, it is completely filled by this abstract plant landscape.

Mountain ridges with lakes and ponds, although I forgot the goats. Spread from indigo blue sketchbook. #ArtAdventCalendar
Indigo blue sketchbook open on a rustic pinewood table, with markers scattered around. The drawing occupying the spread is an abstract alpine landscape. Mountain ridges in silver marker jut out from the bottom, with peaks and troughs occupying about half the page. Upside down ridges are drawn from the top, one quarter of the way down. The technique uses series of parallel lines to create the shapes. The mountains are punctuated by occasional small lakes and pools of colour: pink, green, bronze, blue. Close up detail of the mountain ridges in silver acrylic marker made of shapes filled by parallel lines, with occasional pools of colour brightening up the landscape.

Posidonia Oceanica #2 Prairies of Posidonia Oceanica in the sea at night, shimmering in the moonlight. Watercolour on thick handmade indigo paper. 56x38cm roughly. #ArtAdventCalendar art.piccianeri.com/products/pos...
Thick lines of electric blue metallic colour enter the painting from the top left and top right, sinuously finding their way to the bottom. Thinner lines of paler blue, silver and copper hug the chunky electric blue lines, then abandon them, then hug them again, undulating in the currents. About 10% of the population has a form of colour blindness. That vibrant red and blue colour combo you're so proud of? It might well look like mud brown and desaturated green to more people than you think. Plus, a stark contrast based on hue can look totally the same in grayscale. 2/5
The same 3 small wooden bowls image, in grayscale. Now there is virtually no difference between the bowl on the top (red) and the bowl on the bottom right (electric blue), because the amount of brightness is very similar. On the other hand, the yellow bowl packs a punchy contrast even in grayscale, because it's so much brighter than the other two.

Here's a design mistake most websites make (so you can avoid doing the same). Basing your brand palettes on hue contrast, rather than value. Hue contrast is great when you can see it, but pointless when you can't. 1/5 #accessibility #a11y #DontBeADick
3 small wooden bowls on a rustic wooden background. The bowl on top contains a bright red pigment; below, bright yellow pigment in the bowl on the left, and electric blue pigment in the bowl on the right. The hue contrast between all colours is very strong.
