@bell.bz co-authored Every Layout with @heydonworks.com back in 2019. It transformed how developers approach layout in CSS and in this free lesson of Complete CSS, Andy gives even more detail in how skeletal layouts are the way to get a solid UI piccalilli.link/cc-free-less...
I did a lot of CSS consultancy for various sized organisations — from huge multinational corporations to smaller startups. What do you think the most common downfall in CSS codebases were across nearly all of these organisations? Framework choices? Sass? Less? CSS-in-JS? No, it’s layout and spacing.

In this free preview lesson from his Mindful Design course, @scott.is gives some advice on giving yourself the best possible start when tackling a prototype, including a few tips on dealing with Fear Of The Blank Page™. piccalilli.link/md-free-less...
You open Penpot and you see this — the blank canvas, the empty page — the stuff of nightmares. It can be really really difficult to know how to get started. Even for me, with all my years designing, this still makes me a little bit anxious.

We asked @wil.to what it is he likes about JavaScript. Knowing Mat, it's no surprise to hear him talk with affection for all its rough edges. "A little dust on the lens is all part of the charm" as he puts it. We've got a lot of time for this perspective. piccalilli.link/js4e-q-and-a-1

CSS frameworks are all fun while a project is greenfield, but after that, it's rarely the case. Leaning heavily on his experience as a CSS consultant fixing this exact problem, @bell.bz gives solid advice in this free lesson from Complete CSS.
There is no such thing as a silver bullet in CSS. It’s about finding a system — or a combination of systems — that enable you and your team to author and maintain CSS in the most effective way possible.

"If you were to give a beginner one piece of advice, what would it be?

Learn to really, thoroughly and completely enjoy being shit at something. The process of learning is chaotic, nonlinear, and uniquely human. You’re getting stuck in and you’re deciding to learn a craft or technique for yourself. That is to be cherished and protected and loved."

If you want truly responsive design that works for each and every weirdly sized viewport, you need to use fluid type and fluid space that responds to that viewport. Here's a free lesson from Complete CSS to explain why. piccalilli.link/cc-free-less...
Fluid type and space is one of many techniques you’re going to learn in this course to make authoring CSS easier for you. The easier it is to author and maintain, the better it will scale, and most importantly, there will be less technical debt to manage too. This frees you up to focus on producing a better user experience, rather than chasing down weird CSS issues.

@bell.bz coined the phrase "Be the browser’s mentor, not its micromanager" in 2022 for a talk. He explains exactly what he means by that, and why he lives and dies by it as a CSS programmer, in this free lesson from Complete CSS. piccalilli.link/cc-free-less...
This is the thing about browsers: you can do pretty much whatever the hell you want and rightly so. There’s no stopping you from making your browser whatever size you want. There’s also nothing stopping you from installing whatever extensions you want either. Oh, let’s not forget users can literally write custom styles for websites. All in all, we have little to no control over what the user sees.

@scott.is breaks down the mental cost of distractions and the various ways our brain conserves energy through shortcuts like bias and heuristics, then warns us against taking advantage of this through deceptive patterns in this free lesson. piccalilli.link/md-free-less...
Much like a muscle, our brain has limits to how long it can perform at an optimal level. Glucose is depleted as our brain works, and once its stores are depleted, it kinda goes to shit.

One of the best things about the Mindful Design course is the way @scott.is didn't leave out the messy and chaotic bits, but shows you how to work through them. piccalilli.link/md-q-and-a-4
"Why did you choose a video course over a written course?

You get to follow along with me. You get to see that this is a fucking messy process and that design isn’t something you just learn facts and theories about, then systematically slap the best rectangles ever together in an interface. It’s a craft, it’s a conversation, and it’s a dance between the ideas in your head and your actual ability to get them out onto a screen."

Move slowly and methodically to go fast. Careful planning can reduce technical debt, complexity and stress, resulting in your CSS getting out of control. In this free lesson from the Principles module of Complete CSS, @bell.bz breaks that down. piccalilli.link/cc-free-less...
Why am I telling you all of this? I want you to learn from my mistakes. The reason I am teaching the material that I am teaching in this course is because I have experienced a lot of bad, working in this industry. The vast majority of that bad was entirely avoidable by taking just one step back, slowing the process down and making better decisions with a clearer mind.

Is the Mindful Design course for developers? 100% yes ✅ piccalilli.link/md-q-and-a-3
"I’m a developer who wants to get better at design. Is this the course for me?

One hundred percent yes. It’s a core audience I wanted to address with this course. This is my background, these are my people! I know that so many developer folks want to learn design, but might be discouraged by gatekeeping or the identity crisis design as a practice seems to be in the midst of right now."

Boy, do we need more mindful design in the world. Thankful for people like @scott.is helping give us all the tools to push back against the tech industrial complex piccalilli.link/md-q-and-a-2
"What even is mindful design?

Mindful design at its core is responsible and ethical design. It’s an approach to design that makes explicit the implicit responsibility we have to the people who we ask to use the stuff we make. It’s about learning how humans work, and using that knowledge to empower rather than exploit."

I stumbled into it. Like a weary drunkard into the arms of a kebab shop bossman. I was a developer. I guess I continue to be one, in spirit if not in salary. But I got very bored very quickly of my work looking like — and sorry for getting too technical right at the start — absolute shit."

In this free lesson from JavaScript for Everyone, @wil.to teaches us how to use promises: objects that represent the result of asynchronous operations. piccalilli.link/js4e-free-le...
A Promise is a placeholder for a value that isn't known at the time the Promise is created — an object that represents an asynchronous operation, the terms by which the operation is considered a success or failure, the actions to be taken in either case, and the value that results.
