Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 18/12/2024Teaching a 3/3 load is challenging while trying to conduct research, but teaching many different classes across a two-year rotation is the most challenging part. I've prepped nine different classes so far, none of which are seminar-style. One of those changed books and required a new partial prep! 100
Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 18/12/2024Grades are submitted! It's such a relief to see ZERO Canvas app notifications. Best of all, for the first time in 4 years, I have no new course preps next semester. I can actually enjoy winter break! Applied Time Series Analysis was my new prep last semester, and it was brutal, but I'm proud of it! 140
Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 03/12/2024A lady across the street has one that she grows in a container (it’s over 6 feet tall) and then she lets it go dormant in her garage over the winter. She recently asked if I wanted cuttings and I said yes. But with kids and a dog, I’m not so sure anymore! 120

Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 29/07/2021This study looked at modern and paleolake sediments from the @HSPDP WTK core. An interesting finding from the paleo study: as precipitation increased, so did fire, often at precessional periodicity. This is explained by an increase in grass biomass and species adapted to fire. 100
Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 29/07/2021This was my first phytolith and microcharcoal dataset completed for the diss, but the last published because of challenges posed by a discontinuous #phytolith record. Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 06/01/2021Although our approach was not successful at identifying differences between essentially modern Southwest maize landraces, future studies that include morphometrics from areas in addition to or in combination with the outer periclinal surface (OPS) may prove more discriminating. 000
Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 06/01/2021…we could not discriminate between 24 landraces of maize. This was not surprising since genetic differences were not clearly reflected in MDS space for cultural affiliation/geography (none), and endosperm type (some). Our phytolith morphometries show no clustering in MDS space. 110
Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 06/01/2021We found that: A) #glumes produce rondels, whereas #lemmas and #paleas do not, B) #cupules are devoid of rondels except at glume attachment points, and C) cob location affects rondel size but not shape morphometries. However… 100
Chad Yost @phytolithologist.bsky.social · 06/01/2021We set out to answer two main questions: 1) exactly what #maizecob parts produce rondel phytoliths (this was not clear in the literature), and 2) can we use computer-assisted #morphometricanalysis (CAMA) of cob rondel phytoliths to identify 24 southwestern maize #landraces. 100
