The data in this visualization comes from a U.S. government agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA’s work includes daily weather forecasts, hurricane predictions, and much more. If you've ever changed plans based on a storm warning from the National Weather Service, it was NOAA saving you from the icy roads. (Read more.)
The wind map is one small example of the unexpected benefits of making data public and free. Vast numbers of people have visited since its launch in 2012, more than 100 scientific papers have cited it and it is currently on view at the New York Museum of Modern Art.
Very recently, there have been mass layoffs at NOAA, and the future of the agency is unclear. If this concerns you, speak up. If you're in the U.S., contact your representatives.
