Just learned of a Swiss cigarette brand called Parisienne People, which in the late 1990s and early 2000s commissioned a whole lotta auteurs to create their ads. The last still is from a promo short by Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville!

Would make for a great double bill with Ettore Scola's starry THE TERRACE (1980), also a house-party drama. The interlocking stories are both farcical and tragic, but this is ultimately a somber and very meta look at the failures of the commedia all'italiana films as a vehicle for social change.

It's brilliant how the seemingly aspirational interiors of Govind Nihalani's PARTY (1984) play into the film's critique of the intellectual bourgeois class. One can have the "right" books on the shelves yet remain completely oblivious, if not downright cruel, on an interpersonal and political level.

These are all adapted from Seicho Matsumoto's novels which I'd highly recommend. Very Simenon-esque in their economy of prose as well as the focus on ordinary people who find themselves cornered by their own moral fallibility.

I love how the ocean appears in Yoshitaro Nomura's films. Beautiful, tempestuous, full of unknowable depths—just like the human psyche. From ZERO FOCUS (1961), THE SHADOW WITHIN (1970), CASTLE OF SAND (1974), and THE DEMON (1978).
