Impressed with how amazing @naderman is doing presenting at the #PHPverse event.

Great questions, great pacing.

Core memories thinking of PHP:

- PhpMyAdmin and phpBB(2)
- Using an index.php that includes another script based on a query param. To not allow direct execution of the script, the index.php would define a constant and the script check for its existence.
- register_globals and magic_quotes_gpc and how long it took to eventually get it deprecated.

I started toying around with the web way back in school and soon started breaking and debugging my first instance of phpBB2, which I hosted on an ad-based PHP hoster. This language taught me cowboy debugging, and it was so much fun!

Fast forward: My knowledge of PHP and the experience I mostly gained from dissecting OpenSource projects landed me my first job at an agency, and it still pays my rent to this day. Thank you, PHP!

#30YearsOfPHP

I built my first PHP site 20 years ago; I didn't select from a list of languages, I just used what appeared to be installed on a shared host that I was able to set up (for about £3pm)

My first site let friends send messages and share photos - seems similar to another PHP project that got popular about the same time, but I didn't take over the world.

Since then it's let me start 2 businesses, and travel around the world speaking at conferences. Truly a life-changing language!

I owe my entire career to this language.

I landed my first engineering role from just going to a PHP Meetup. Meetups and then conferences steered me into Developer Relations. I've made friends all over the world. I've watched it go from an underperforming, language perceived as legacy into a blazing fast, top choice for development due to crazy levels of innovation. #30YearsOfPHP

I started my #PHP journey in 2006 after realising that I was not going to be a rockstar. I developed a local gig-listing website that scraped gigs from myspace:

I had a full time job 6 months later!

@phpc I was pumped to add PHP to my first website in my teens and create reusable menus (later leading up to adding security vulnerabilities before learning how to sanitize database inputs 🙃). I had fun modding phpBB in the aughts (it’s still around and I’ve come back around to it).

I don’t think I quite expected to build a career upon it (shout out to Drupal (and some Joomla along the way in freelance work). And here I am, maintaining Wordpress sites too.

PHP has just turned 30. I've used it for most of its existence (since PHP 3) and for all of my career. I make a reasonably comfort living from writing it.

Most of the criticisms I hear are things that were issues in PHP 5 and are not relevant to modern PHP (though horrible legacy code still exists and I work with it), or are looking down on the language because it's accessible to newbies. Like C, it's not perfect, but it's doing something right given how widespread it is.

I was 14 when I started with php. 22 years ago, when I build my first website. I used a book to learn #php.

I came across a website pfz.nl a former Dutch community. And started helping with their conference a few years later. My first contact with people like @Skoop, @sebastian @shochdoerfer and @mvriel and many more. All of them are friendly, willing to help.

I joined the @phpdoc project. And look at me now. I write code, used by thousands of people. #php pays my bills. #30YearsOfPHP

Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in #30YearsOfPHP I've been around since the early days, contributing only a bit to the #PHP core itself, but mainly as a developer for the #pear repository, at conferences (#LinuxTag, #PHPConference) or projects like #TYPO3.
It's great to see the language evolve, how clean and versatile components and libraries have become. It helped shape the internet, with a lot of (also excellent) languages along the way.
Thanks for a lot of great friends! 🥰

30 years ago, Rasmus unleashed PHP upon the world. A very short time later, a 21 year old me found PHP3 and fell in love immediately.

By 2002, I was submitting my first patches, within weeks I had direct commit karma. By 2006 I was speaking at conferences, writing a book on extensions, and Rasmus was personally recommending me for jobs.

I've seen PHP grow through most of its life. I've seen the lives of our community grow and change and been changed by it in return.

I recently joined a startup. Nearly the entire code base was build by a single person over 3 years, who was learning programming as he went. Yep, he used #PHP.

Is it good code? Not by a long shot, though I've definitely seen worse. But it *works*, runs, and is making money. Now we can work to make it better, and make even more money.

*That* is why PHP is so popular, and still so relevant after #30YearsOfPHP. It's both a blessing and a curse, at times, but PHP lets people just get sh*t done.

The PHP programming language turns 30 today.

It was one of the earliest programming languages I learned (after Perl) and the one I’ve use for the longest.

From WordPress, which employed me and powered a speaking a teaching part of my life, to Laravel which is the base of most of my projects now, PHP has been a huge part of my career and hobbiest web development.

Through those projects, I’ve made many long lasting friendships.

Happy Birthday PHP!

In the summer of 2008, I was at a small agency doing video work. When our "webmaster" left, my boss asked if I could "make heads or tails of this #PHP".

Smug from years of writing #BASIC on a TI-83+, I decided to give it a shot and ended up changing my career trajectory.

Happy 30th, PHP! You're not the only language, but you're the one I always come back to 😁

PHP is 30. What a ride. Its path was not straight forward as wasn't mine.

I hobby coded (script kiddie) since 2000. I made a career in 2011 when i was at a very low point in my life.

It taught me self worth again, i got to know a lot of interesting people and seen PHP run small scripts to huge retail operations.

Without PHP i would not be where i am today.

Also you are basically a necromancer when coding PHP. You can not beat that! #PHP

It was surprised when some people contacted me like 3 years ago to work in PHP because i hadn't a lot of professional experience with it. One of the best job i had.

@phpc 24 years ago we began to write the website for our Ultima Online game server in PHP. It allowed us to very easily show SQL-based content. The code was upgraded during the years from PHP-version to PHP-version, and it is still running and used by our players today!

Recently I wrote a small web backend for my job in PHP. It took around 100 lines of code to achieve the same that "more modern" languages would require 1000 lines and a dozen external modules for.
Thank you PHP! #30YearsOfPHP

#PHP is for the web. What brought me to using PHP in 1996 was creating interactive web pages for the educational software company I worked at. I got involved with the project when it didn't yet do what I needed. It exploded in use because it made it really easy to build for the web in a way that no other languages ever have. It didn't start out as a sophisticated programming language, but it is now. And it's still fantastic for the web. #30YearsOfPHP

Happy birthday #PHP.

It's been 20 years of working with PHP for me. 15 of those where it's been the main language at the company I worked for.

So many stories, shared moments at conferences, the friends made along the way, and so many features shipped.

From open-source browser games, to social networks, medical applications and performance tooling to open-source ecosystem tooling contributions.

Not a home at the moment, so I don't have a picture of the full heard today:
