One main protagonist, one very important side character. You’ll understand better when you read it😊

Victorian crossbows are an essential element in my new fantasy novel, out today. I do try to do my research 😊

But if I were Richard Sharpe and I wanted that French sentry potted at fifty yards in silence…

My first guess would be poaching but the weapon in Tod’s hands is made as well as a Purdy or a Holland and Holland sporting rifle. TBH I own a lot of books on English sport (hunting and fishing ) in the 18th and 19th c. And… I don’t know.

My friend Fil Walker has done some extensive research on both construction and maintenance of military crossbows. I think his findings can be summed up that most Italian crossbowmen had to be guildsman to have the skills to build and maintain their weapons.

Painting. That was my choice. No guarantee it was a good choice but I did my editing…

Also recommend his ‘Ride to Khiva’. He’s a very plain writer, almost stark, with occasional bursts of lyrical description. Warning: some casual Victorian racism, classism, and misogyny, although less than you might expect.

Not a defence of British Imperialism or Colonialism. Merely a note that ‘they’ didn’t always ‘believe all that’ ‘back in the day’ and that portraying the growth of progressive ideas in history is sometimes just… history

But the journals and letters of the participants don’t reflect this racialized contempt. The officers of the expedition, for example, demanded that their ‘sports day’ after Khartoum fell be interracial, African, Indian, British and Mohawk all together’as we have served together as brothers.’ (3/3)

Recently, looking at a fairly silly post on FB about the Battle of Abu Klea (British Desert Column vs Mahdists in 1885 on the Gordon Expedition) there were over 100 racist comments about Africans and Moslems. I’ll leave aside that the post got pretty much every aspect of the battle wrong. But (2/3)

Christian and Miles Cameron @phokion.bsky.social · 18/09/2026

Probably pointless rant… Modern racists have a tendency to attribute their racial attitudes to the past (the racist good old days) and treat anything that defies this trope in historical fiction as ‘Woke.’ (1/3) but…
