We're expanding operations and forging new partnerships with federal, state, tribal, and private organizations this year, all to restore this endangered grassland ecosystem. Keep an eye out for more details soon!

This is a good time to mention that our rainforest site in Madagascar is home to at least one entirely new species too! Say hello to the adorable Boophis samuelsabini, known only from Ivohiboro! Photo courtesy of Edmund Basham

People are not the problem, they are the solution, and we’re fighting poverty through restoration together.

Since 2019, we’ve seen over a 50% drop in fire starts near our restoration site of Ivohiboro. Rice harvests have doubled and tripled because the landscape can hold more water with more unburned vegetation. Communities have even started making firebreaks on their own.
110
The Phoenix Conservancy @phoenixconservancy.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
These firebreaks were intended to stop the spread of wildfires set by people grazing cattle. But something else happened. People stopped setting fires.
110
The Phoenix Conservancy @phoenixconservancy.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Case in point: our work in Madagascar. We started hiring thousands of people to create and maintain firebreaks in 2019. All the work is done by hand in communities where the average family earns just $100 per year.
Firebreaks wind up the steep slopes of a grassy mountainside in Madagascar. The endangered rainforest of Ivohiboro is visible on the left side of the image.

Poverty denies choice to: -Not cut down a tree, -Not start a wildfire, -Not poach wildlife. Those are all actions by desperate people doing what they can to survive. If we can alleviate poverty, we can allow people to make choices. When people have choice, they make different decisions.

What’s the biggest threat to rainforests in Madagascar? 🌴 A lot of people might say deforestation, or poaching, or wildfires, or climate change. Those are certainly all threats, but they’re not the biggest threat. Poverty is. #Conservation #Restoration #Madagascar #Nature

We're lucky enough to have this flower in Ivohiboro, where it grows in the quartzite gravel at the top of the mountain. Though it isn't the showiest orchid, we think Cynorkis cinnabarina is elegant in its own right. 💅 What's your favorite orchid species?

Happy #WildflowerWednesday! 🌼 Orchid Edition ✅ Meet Cynorkis cinnabarina, a flower without a common name! This species is quite rare and is mostly found in higher altitude grassland and shrubland in Madagascar. #Wildflower #Orchid #Nature #Conservation #Photography #Botany #Biology #Madagascar

Black-tailed Prairie Dogs play a vital role in the Great Plains ecosystem, so don't mistake their adorable demeanor for ineffectiveness! Have you ever seen a Prairie Dog before?

This grazing promotes diverse, nutritious forage for many herbivores (including Bison 🦬), while their burrows provide homes for many other wildlife species, including Burrowing Owls, Swift Foxes, and snakes 🐍.
210
The Phoenix Conservancy @phoenixconservancy.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
What's more, these raised entrances also serve as effective predator viewing points, but to maintain their views, Prairie Dogs must constantly graze the vegetation surrounding their burrows.
110
The Phoenix Conservancy @phoenixconservancy.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Prairie Dogs live in family groups called "coterie," burrowing far underground and creating domed mounds at the entrances. Though these mounds look like piles of dirt, they actually prevent burrows from flooding during the heavy rains that are a feature of the Great Plains' dramatic weather systems.

Its pungent taste also deters grazers, so it can provide a natural barrier for protecting more sensitive plants. Overall, this poppy is an important member of the native Hawaiian ecosystem and continues to set an example of strength and longevity!

It's #WildflowerWednesday! 🌼This week, we're showcasing the Hawaiian Poppy (Argemone glauca). Hawaiian Poppies are native perennials on all the Hawaiian Islands. This flower grows rapidly in disturbed areas, making it a particularly stable native species. #Nature #Conservation #Hawaii #Photography

Lomatium species were also a staple in the diets of indigenous peoples, who used the roots to make a flour (hence the name "biscuitroot"). The next time you visit Yu-mos-tos or any other Palouse Prairie remnant, keep your eye out for Lomatium multifidum and enjoy the view!

Dry forest is the most endangered ecosystem in the islands and by far the most biodiverse, but invasive trees limit its restoration. To start our efforts, our battle-hardened team cleared acres of invasives on Big Island so dozens of rare and endangered native species can be planted in their place.
